A question came up recently that I have not been able to find an answer too…

ok here is the scenario:

If a girl is attracted to her best friend (a girl) and kisses her on the cheek as a sign of affection is this a sin because she is actually attracted to her?

does it all have to do with intent? because that is the best that me and my friends could think of

i used a girl in the example because it is not uncommon for girls to give each other kisses on the cheek as a sign of affection…you could also complicate the matter and ask if it would be a sin for the girl who was attracted to the other one to receive a kiss on the cheek from the other girl?

also we were wondering if it is a sin for gay people to kiss on the cheek? we agree that the lips would definitely be a sin

also what “caliber” of sin would either of these be mortal or venial?

not sure if there is a clear cut answer here or not but any opinions you have I would love to hear:)

From my best understanding (read: not infallible understanding), if the person kissing the cheek kissed with lusty intentions would it be a sin. Otherwise, you might argue that it -could- become an occasion of sin especially if she were hoping that this kiss would “lead to something more” so to speak. The first case would be venial and the second could arguably be venial.

Intent only has to do with whether it is more serious or not. If the intent was truly an innocent kiss or perhaps that is the custom of her people, then no, there is no sin. But only she could determine that herself.

It would not be a sin to receive the kiss either especially if there is no suspicion of ill-will or sinfulness.

I think that it would again be an occasion of sin if gays kissed on the cheek unless it is just a custom. On the lips, definitely venial because gays have no business getting closer in that manner.

Hope I helped at all!

You and your friends have interesting discussions.

My take on this - don’t kiss anyone you’re attracted to unless you’re thinking about becoming engaged. Don’t escalate it to any more than holding hands until you’re quite close to the wedding. If you just don’t do it, you don’t have to worry what kind of sin it is.

On the other hand, how soulful can cheek kissing be? Soulful cheek kissing would look pretty funny and it would be embarrassing if other people were in the room. But that should be a rule: no soulful cheek kissing in private. Because soulful cheek kissing in private could well become an occasion of sin, the lips are just so close to the cheeks…

Had you been drinking when you had this discussion?
