Two of my friends have not been getting along lately. Since this is the case, would it be sinful to attempt to bring them into the same place, knowing the anger it could provoke? More specifically, could this be considered a mortal sin?

I don’t think so, not unless you thought it was likely that either of them would get physically or verbally abusive.

But whether sinful or not it would be unlikely to be helpful if done in this sort of backhand manner.

How about being open? Say to each of them ‘I know you two are having problems, I’d like to help you sort them out. Would you agree to a meeting if I was there and acted as an impartial mediator’ or something like that.

Mortal sin? I don’t think so, but it might be ill-advised, especially if you’re certain it may cause ugliness.

"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God." Matt. 5:9

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that everything that doesn’t turn out well is somehow a sin. What you are proposing doesn’t sound like a particularly good idea, but if you tried it, thinking sincerely that it would be beneficial, it would not be a sin for you whether or not it turned out well. You don’t want to be hesitant to try anything because it might not be perfect.

Now, if you arranged for them to be together and sold tickets to the ensuing fight, well, that might be sinful for you! 🙂
