If a child or teen snuck candy without their parent’s knowledge or permission (hence the sneaking) and they knew better, is it a mortal sin or a venial sin. Obviously you need to know it’s a grave matter and it must be a grave matter that you give full consent to for it to classify as a mortal sin. But is candy a grave matter? It isn’t stealing from a bank but it also is taking something without permission.

Do you really think that a piece of candy would be grave matter?

Are you talking about sneaking a piece of candy out of the family cookie jar or shoplifting from someone else’s business. It makes a difference.

I notice that most shoplifters tend to conflate the two.

This situation would be “out of the family cookie jar”.

I wouldn’t call it a grave matter, but it becomes a slippery slope if it turns into stealing household money to buy drugs or cashing in the 401K to play the ponies.

Nip it in the bud before it becomes a problem. It isn’t a grave matter.

IMHO, it would be very difficult for a child under the age of 11 or 12 to commit a mortal sin.
