In Exodus 25: 40, Moses was told to make a copy from the pattern that he saw.

Does each item in the law of Moses represent something of heaven?

Do the vestments represent God’s attributes or something similar?

Did the tabernacle’s structure represent God’s attributes or something similar?

Sort of partly 1 & partly 3 ​

The idea is that the earthly tabernacle was a copy of one that was heavenly: what was in heaven, was the model for what was below. This way of thinking can be found in the Letter to the Hebrews - it’s very ancient, & much older than Israel; it was part of the cultural background common to Israel & (in this instance) her Canaanite neighbours.

In this passage, a widespread way of thinking is being adopted so as to express Israel’s own faith in & worship of the God Who chose Israel as His own People.

In your judgement, Did Moses have a vision heaven and use that as a model for his copies?

In other words, Did God reveal things to Moses or did Moses borrow ideas from other humans?

In other words, Was the vision inspired or borrowed and changed?

Hi Seamus,

I think it is a little of both. You see, Moses knew of the Caananite religions and the signs they used and what they meant to these pagans.

So, When God showed Moses (and the elders) a vision of heaven (You can see some of it in Revelation and Daniel too.) Moses copied the heavenly vision using earthly things – a tent, metal, incense, etc. BUT he copied it in such a way as to show the important differences between the Caananite religion and the religion of YHWH. Moses didn’t want anyone to get confused, so he was careful with what and how he copied it.

It’s sort of like apologetics in symbols or signs. The Caananites could learn where their errors were by looking at the differences between their own religion and that of the Hebrews.

It seems to be that each item must correspond to the Heavenly Liturgy or God’s attributes.

More is said about the copy Moses made of heaven in the New Testament’s Book of Hebrews. I don’t have a Bible with me or I would identify the section. What Moses saw I don’t know or how he learned of this pattern I don’t know. But the fact of it implies that Moses knew Christ and the redemption he would bring, as the Book of Hebrews shows. Did Moses have a vision of heaven whose pattern he copied when he designed the tent of meeting with God? Or did he learn of it some other way? Somehow in any case he saw the great truth of the salvation Christ would bring.

The pattern in Hebrews Ch 8 4* If then he were on earth**, he would not be a priest: seeing that there would be others to offer gifts according to the law, 5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things. *

That is the pattern before the curtain is torn and the holy place is shorn off with all perishable things.
