Hello! I’m a convert who fell away for several years and recently came back. I am lost without using the hymnal at mass. Hymnals and song sheets are not provided right now due to Covid-19. Can you tell me some of the most common hymns sung at Mass so I can add them to a playlist to become more familiar?

Thank you!

I think this will depend highly on your local parish. Different places have different ‘flavors’, so to speak. Ours “prints” the list in the online bulletin in advance. Maybe someone in your parish can provide something like that for you? You could then just Google (name of hymn)+”lyrics”. I’ve been doing that for our online Mass streams.

The other option is to find out which hymnal your local parish uses and get yourself a copy. They’re often less than $20.

Unfortunately, the hymns are not listed in the bulletin. They were in my previous parish, but not this one.

Getting the same hymnal the parish uses is a great idea. Thank you!

Just curious, are people discouraged from singing these days? And that’s partly the reason for no hymnals / song sheets (along with the direct sharing of germs due to hands touching the hymnals).

I haven’t been back to Mass yet so I am wondering.

I believe they are discouraging in some parishes. I live in a very rural area, and there’ve only been 13 cases total in this particular county, so at this point, singing is not discouraged, though we do all have to wear masks the entire time, only removing it for a brief moment to consume the host.

All hymnals have been removed from the pews but we are given a handout with the hymns for each Sunday Mass. We still sing. Masks are recommended but not required.

Masks required and no hymn singing for us when mass returns in a couple of weeks. I think it depends where you live. It varies.

Unfortunately, the hymn choice will depend on your parish. Most parishes have a couple dozen familiar hymns they use all the time, but it varies by parish. So we wouldn’t have any idea what your parish selects.

Call someone in the parish, ask the priest, ask one of the people at Mass next week, what songs are standard. Most parishes run through the same 20 songs over and over.

Here you will hear “Soul of My Savior” at every Mass, you will never hear “Let Us Break Bread Together On Our Knees”, you will hear “The National Hymn” but not “The National Anthem”.

It really depends from your parish.

The pastor here is somewhat of a charismatic and will tend to favor recent hymns from French charismatic communities, particularly the Communauté de l’Emmanuel. Other parishes will have different preferences.

Thank you, everyone. All good advice. I did also find a list of “Songs that Every American Catholic Should Know” which recalled a few to mind that I had forgotten. 🙂
