I think he might have meant they are roughly both an hour each.I don’t know where you pray…but in the Byzantine world Mattins and Lauds are never separated as the Latins do. Orthros is just the Greek word for Mattins (Latin), both describe the morning service.
And I don’t know anyone who could do Mattins with the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in an hour.
Sunday Orthros at Holy Resurrection Monastery where I usually attend takes about 2hours 15 min. Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom takes about 1.5 hours.
