EWTN is running old programs on TV and radio where Mother Angelica is quoted as saying: "The essence of evangelization is to tell people that Jesus loves them."
They repeat this quotation over and over, as if it really said something and meant something.
It just seems too trite and not very accurate. Evangelization is more like spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, teaching all “men” to observe what he has commanded. Jesus’s words spell out the mission of the Church and the obligation of all mankind. I don’t that can be reduced to a lesser essence. “Love God and love our neighbor” is shorter but more action-oriented than what she says.
( BTW, this word processor and spell checker always underlines evangelization as if I had misspelled it. Someone should fix this.)
