EWTN is running old programs on TV and radio where Mother Angelica is quoted as saying: "The essence of evangelization is to tell people that Jesus loves them."

They repeat this quotation over and over, as if it really said something and meant something.

It just seems too trite and not very accurate. Evangelization is more like spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, teaching all “men” to observe what he has commanded. Jesus’s words spell out the mission of the Church and the obligation of all mankind. I don’t that can be reduced to a lesser essence. “Love God and love our neighbor” is shorter but more action-oriented than what she says.

( BTW, this word processor and spell checker always underlines evangelization as if I had misspelled it. Someone should fix this.)

She’s right. The Gospel message is all about love, mercy, compassion. Sinful behavior comes from an absence of such.
She was a wise woman. May we all be so moved.
May she rest in the local Ng arms of Jesus and His holy Mother.

You had it right, when you said evangelization is like “spreading” the good news.

Like the parable Christ tells us of seed being spread, it’s capacity for spiritual yield is dependent on the soil, not the sower.

However, once we spread the seed of God’s truth, its up to those receiving it to nurture it.

Mother Angelica sowed the seeds, but another gift from God, that being free will, will determine if it is acted on.

Mother Angelica evangelized very, very well. Those who heard the word she shared would do well to act on it (“Let those who have ears, hear!”), and those of us who know the good news, should strive to live up to the example this beloved Holy woman did over her lifetime.

This is what we as disciples of Christ are called to do!

Peace and All Good!

Mother Angelica was exactly correct in what she said, how she said it and in her emphasis. It assuredly says everything and means everything.

Jesus did not bring us Good News. He Himself is the Good News. As the Apostle John wrote:

This is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Mother Angelica was, in every way, a truly remarkable and gifted Religious and an extraordinary person to interact with. Her accomplishments were extraordinary and she will forever be one of the great ones to emerge from the Church in the United States. As an abbess, she was very much in the mould of the greatest ones in Church history…Saint Hilda of Whitby, Saint Walburga, the abbesses of Helfta, and, of course, Saint Hildegard, abbess and Doctor of the Church.

I owe a lot to Mother Angelica … through the years she has helped bring me back to the Lord many times … God Bless Her.

As a convert, the intellectual side of the Church first attracted me. But what really convinced me was the idea of Love as the order of the universe. Love as the guiding principle. In my most scrupulous days, when I was confessing twice a week, when I tried to end my life, I was sitting in front of the Tabernacle and I felt (not heard) Jesus saying to me “do you really think I would let you die without a chance to repent?”

Mother Angelica is right. Even Pope Benedict spoke out against reducing everything to moral codes. It is about love. Without that love, that relationship, Christianity means absolutely nothing.
