Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This thread is based on personal observation and interior questioning. It is not intended for debate. If any reader wants to debate issues from the Democratic Convention or political views please begin another thread. This thread is intended to help us as Catholics observe “the signs of the times” and prayerfully ask, “Lord, what would you have me do?” and “What would you have me do especially in defending the unborn?”

Last night in the “City of Brotherly Love”, the USA and others were invited to hear several speakers – I did not listen, but my husband told me this morning that the President of “Planned Parenthood” spoke. When he told me of her appearance on stage, I also remembered hearing that some mothers of young men shot by police were going to be there as well.

While I grieve for any mother who buries her child, no matter the cause, I wondered if anyone besides me saw the “disconnect” between the very concept of Motherhood and Planned Parenthood? The number of aborted babies, and the numbers of children and mothers harmed by abortion seem to make little or no impression on too many Americans and persons in other parts of the world. What happened to the human family? What happened even to Catholic families and to non Catholic Christian and Jewish families? What are the “signs of the times” telling us?

The signs keep telling me to pray and to speak the Truth to counter the lies being told. The deception in the language of “Reproductive health” and “Women’s rights” has bothered me from the time I first heard them, and yet again, many American Catholics and Catholics worldwide, seem to accept them as OK. These terms are part of the “new normal” which has increased the level of violence done to the human family. I could go on and on, but I do not need to say more to most who read this Forum. I pray God will raise up more men and women who love the Truth God has given us, and those willing to keep asking the Holy Spirit for grace to do the Truth and speak the Truth – whenever, wherever, and to whomever we can.

I’m grateful to all who pray outside abortion clinics and speak to those who listen, I’m grateful to all who support programs to help mothers keep their babies and refuse abortion. There are many individual Catholics and Catholic agencies striving to do the Truth in word and action to save the lives of the unborn and to build up their own families and parishes in Faith, Hope and above all Charity. There are some Christian and Jewish agencies who see the evil of abortion, also. By God’s grace, may we all continue faithful to God’s Truth, even to the end of our lives here on earth. We have before us death and life. Choose life!

I agree, and it disgusts me that while, on the one hand, the DNC reminds us that black lives matter in relation to police shootings, but they happily support planned parenthood opening clinics in minority neighborhoods and ensuring more black babies are aborted than born.

Dear DeusExMachina,

Thanks for your reply. I’m not really “surprised” by the DNC 's “double-speak” and deception – what saddens me even more are Catholics like Vice-President Biden, Minority Leader Pelosi and now the Nominee Tim Kaine who support the Democratic platform advocating Abortion on demand. There is such a lack of Truth in what is being proposed to our country and the world!

So many lies are being told and too many Catholics are simply going along with little or no concern over “believing the lies” ; they just accept them. Non Catholic Clinton professes to be Christian as do many in the Democratic party yet they cannot see the evil of Abortion nor the part Planned Parenthood plays in providing abortions for their own profit.

The poor have not been served well, God knows! How many babies have been murdered in their mother’s wombs with no way to defend themselves. So few persons even try to save them. Who is on God’s side any more? I for one want to continue praying the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. In this Year of Mercy, I pray God will have mercy on the USA, and the world.

You are right to be concerned about this issue. I recommend getting involved at your parish in any pro-life ministries that are ongoing, if you haven’t already, and continue to pray, as you have been doing. And vote for anti-abortion candidates. Outside of this, I really don’t think there is much more that can be done, or at least anything that will have a large impact on abortion policy as a whole. I think the battle against abortion in terms of getting it outlawed, has already been lost. I often hear about how more and more youth are anti-abortion, but it doesn’t matter how many people are against abortion if pro-abortion candidates keep getting elected to public office. I’ll believe that most young people are against abortion when they make it a core issue. Until then it’s just wishful thinking.

As for concern about Catholic public officials being pro-abortion, well the Church has made it quite clear over the last decade or so that for the most part it is not going to pressure candidates or criticize them for voting for anti-Catholic values such as abortion or gay marriage. There are occasionally exceptions, such as Kaine’s bishop who recently released a statement about Kaine’s pro-abortion voting record, but this tends to be the exception rather than the rule. If you’re not going to publicly rebuke or deny Communion to public officials that support abortion, they’re not going to have incentive to change their views or actions. Yes, God will judge them in the end, but that doesn’t help us stop abortions here and now. This has been the policy primarily because the Church is afraid of losing people to other denominations, which in all fairness probably would happen, but if you’re going to take this tact, you’re going to have to accept that the vast majority are never going to change their views and keep advocating for abortion and will continue to push for it in the public sphere. The Church has tried to be Mr. Nice Guy in the hopes that Catholic politicians will change their views, but looking at how many prominent Catholics have changed their views on abortion, at least in the U.S., this strategy has been a complete and utter failure. Sometimes you have to be harsh to get your point across and institute some real consequences for these kinds of actions, but most of the Church leadership seems unwilling to do so.

But to summarize, as laity you can get involved, pray, and vote against abortion as much as possible. It’s up to Church leadership to do the rest.

Are those Catholic politicians Catholic? I have many pro choice catholic friends. But all of them don’t know anything about the church and they all attend mass every sunday. They are really clueless. They know Catholics are pro life, but they don’t know why/they don’t really believe in “sticking to the rules” and think that the Church made a mistake etc.

I don’t really trust any politicians, especially in America. They can act “Christian” when it’s necessary (to get our support).

Motherhood and abortion seems contradictory but remember, they still love their children the same way as a Catholic mom would. They are just ignorant of the fact that the fetus is very much alive. However, Planned Parenthood is just an evil organization and while I heard they might do good things for women (not abortion), I feel that the whole thing is just terrible imo. I’ve seen speeches and their website and everything. Blech.

I don’t know why everyone is so obsessed over wanting an abortion. It’s possible to get one now and pro choice are evidently winning, just ssssh and stop promoting abortions

Abortion is legal here but thankfully a lot of people here are still pro life. I’m just sad that the USA is influencing the younger generation a lot.

Anyway, both the democratic and republican party are a huge mess. It’s a sad time for Americans indeed

I believe that the pro choice people, for the most part, think that the abortion issue is just a political issue, that it has nothing to do with real babies being killed.

They don’t think that far. I know I didn’t back when I was pro-choice, I thought that an abortion would be the responsible thing to do if I became pregnant. It had nothing to do with a baby.

I thank God he opened my eyes before I did get pregnant, to realize how wrong abortion is. I will never forget applying for welfare, 6 months pregnant with my second son, (my husband had abandoned us), and being asked if I wanted an abortion. I felt as if silence fell, and the whole universe held its breath waiting for my answer.

I said no, and am so glad I did. Both my sons, grown now, are such blessings.

.

Thanks so much for your beautiful witness to the Life, God entrusted into your choice and I thank God with you for your “yes”. I believe in a very real spiritual sense the universe did stand still waiting for your “yes” as it did for Mary’s words: “Be it done to me according to your will”. I hope many readers will be inspired by your words to choose Life!

In terms of prochoice Catholics, it can be simple social engineering.

I early on thought abortion for my kid would be unacceptable if such a situation arose.

However, I due to the “teaching” of society didn’t know what to make of abortion. They said it wasn’t much more than like wasting a sperm… SO idk how do I tell anyone that they can/can’t do so right?

I also had firmly and always held the view in mind that those aborted were a round egg…

It was only a few years ago a dear friend was basically refused medical treatment to save her baby because it was “abortable” and I was confused…as the kid was sort of able to be “born” at this point… she held it with minimal assistance and it was eventually born at a still abort able time and lives on to this day.

Then I also realized we men know nothing of “weeks” 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 15 weeks… when I hear an abortion can happen in “X weeks” my brain always processed it as less than months… yeah some of those weeks add up and your realize they are killing literal liveable humans…then there is that realization that we have attained the epitome of evil in literally killing babies for no reason. 😦

But this process of my own realization is much in many ways like pro choice catholics. or probably a lot of prochoices.

It is funny I know quite a few people who don’t have a stance. And in one conversation they will talk of abortions in a very negative and demeaning way, and in another convo they will talk of how certain young mothers etc should get one…because their hearts know abortion is bad, but the teachings of the world say it is a normal course of life 😦

Dear tseleehw,

Yes, I am already involved in my parish; living our Baptismal promises is a very important part of being Catholic. We are Baptized into Christ, and His Church exists to evangelize. We are to carry on the Mission of Christ.

Prayer always is a priority, but we need to be contemplatives in action. So my husband and I do whatever we can to bring Jesus to all we meet. I believe there is much more that can and needs to be done to protect life. We need to continue to speak to priests, deacons and laity in our families and in our parishes to rouse those who prefer to sleep. If possible we can alo contribute to organizations like “Priests for Life”.

We need to be more vigilant in the education of our children in the faith and in the continuing faith formation of Adults. My husband and I are involved in facilitating Bible Studies and adult studies on the Catechism. I am in the Adult Legion of Mary and we are trying to form a Junior Legion in our Parish. We will soon be participating in Life Chain outside our local municipal building in October. We have always voted for anti abortion candidates and encouraged others to do so in my family and parish. I have also spent time on the internet doing the same.

It continues to sadden me to see how few Bishops and clergy in general speak about the issues of contraception and abortion, but I can only write to both clergy and politicians, speaking the Truth. Laity need to encourage and pray for them. They will answer to God for their own decisions. We will all answer to God for our own decisions to do or not do the Truth, as lovingly as we can. I pray for the clergy and the laity to do as God has revealed His Truth to us. We cannot serve two masters. We need to ask ourselves, whom do I love and whom do I serve? Do I choose God’s Life or do I choose death? Do I choose good or evil?

Thanks for your reply. I am grateful for the young and old persons I know who are pro-life, I am grateful for the Catholic politicians like Chris Smith who has worked so many years in Congress to protect life, I am grateful for holy Bishops and Priests like St. John Paul II, and the late Fr. Benedict Groeschel, CFR who with a layman Chris Bell founded “Good Counsel Homes” over 30 years ago to help Babies and their Mothers. It may be a very little that I can do, but it is important for me to do all I can for Jesus through Mary with much love!

Dear Lea,

Thanks for your reply. When one is Baptized in the Catholic Church, that person is baptized into Christ. If that person has not learned or has rejected what the Church teaches, then that person may be a “Catholic” in name only. It is sad, and it is a sad time right now for America. If more Catholics continued to listen to what Jesus has taught and what the Church continues to share from Scripture, they would understand more of God’s Truth. They would be bringing more of Christ’s Light into the darkness of this world.

Although Catholics are not a majority in the USA, remember the first Christians were outnumbered by the pagans after Christ ascended into heaven, but look how Christianity grew and influenced the pagan world. We are weak, but Christ remains strong. Too many Catholic, Protestant and Jewish Americans are drifting away from the teachings of the Old and New Testaments. The Ten Commandments are being removed from public buildings in America, even while we pledge allegiance to the flag as one nation under God.

The devil is the father of lies and there have been lies told by many, for many years to this day. For the devil is cunning and seeks to make evil look good, and good to look evil. He deceives people who are willing to listen to lies and be deceived. A baby has a right to live, yet we hear only about the mother’s right to choose what happens to her body – there is no mention of the body of the baby forming within her from the first moment of conception.

Catholic politicians who say they are “personally opposed to abortion” but stand for a woman’s right to choose – listened to a lie. Abortion is not merely a “choice” for a woman to make. Willful abortion is murder of a defenseless unborn baby. When there is a medical procedure which may result in the death of either mother or child that is different. It is the will to dispose of the innocent unborn life that is intrinsically evil. “Legal” does not make any action morally right or just. Abortion is protected by an unjust and immoral law. If men and women wanted to know the Truth about abortion they could find out because science has done so much to show life growing in the womb.

Some prefer not to see. There are none so blind as those who will not see. They would rather choose death than life. I am sorry there seem to be more voices shouting for abortion than for life. I am sorry for the babies who have been killed and for the mothers and fathers who now regret they did not let those babies live. More and more young persons are opening their eyes and their hearts to the Truth. We need to encourage them to continue to choose Life!

This was all carefully planned. It took decades for people, mostly groups of radical feminists who hated the family, to drip the poison into our veins. Years of gradually making us less and less sensitive. Decades of Christians being attacked. Some years ago, I watched a woman on TV yell: “Keep your beliefs off my body.” Her body? Did she get pregnant by herself? And what about the unique human being growing inside of her? Attempts to restrict abortion immediately becomes a “War on Women.” People have been bullied by half-truths and lies for decades.

In 1969, it started, and here’s how abortion was marketed: catholicnewsagency.com/resources/abortion/articles-and-addresses/an-ex-abortionist-speaks/

We were lied to.

And why did the Supreme Court, not the people, legalize abortion in 1973? And who was Jane Roe in Roe v. Wade? Her real name is Norma McCorvey. After winning this decision, she did not get an abortion. She became actively pro-life.

I stood in front of an abortion clinic with other Catholics. We prayed. None of us said anything mean or hurtful to the young women going in. I remember one young lady coming out with a bunch of yellow roses in her arms. We had a few women walk up to us who were non-Catholic Christians who encouraged us. And they added the following: “Our pastor never preaches about this.”

I recently read an article about a woman who goes to many pro-life rallies around the country to spread the truth. She said that the pro-abortion protestors always got the media’s attention and their view was published and/or televised. The pro-life side usually got no coverage and in a small number of the cases, just a brief mention. So, the media is clearly on the side of the pro-abortion people. The public wants to believe someone is right and the media is telling them the truth. Any research into the media’s coverage of abortion groups and rallies over the years will show that they are, in essence, telling the public, using nice words, that the pro-abortion groups are right. That those opposed need to realize it’s none of our business. That’s a lie.

For the sake of the human family, we need to spread the truth because there is a well-financed and well-organized opposition to the truth. From an unknown source: “We must speak the truth daily to counter the lies being spread among the people.”

Thank you for your reply and all of the work that you do. The vast majority of the laity have other duties, such as families to care for, and everyday jobs, so while the average person may not be able change the world, we can at least try to teach and affect individuals that come into contact with us in our daily lives in a positive way.
Dear tseleehw,

Thanks again for your reply. We are able to do more now since our own parents have passed away, and families require less attention, yet it is important for every Catholic to give a good witness in this world. Even when we were both working full time, we attended weekly Bible studies – tired as I was, I was always glad I went to the Bible Study. Some young families in our parish who still have school age children, work as catechists or come to Bible Studies to learn more in order to be better parents.

I agree with you, however, that those who care for families or have heavy demands at secular jobs they hold, can yet give excellent witness by the manner in which they live. Good example in the workplace, always using good language and only wholesome conversations can do much to raise the level of society. Likewise patience in the line at the store or a smile to our neighbors, any act of kindness we may do for the love of God and neighbor is important. Seeing a family pray together at Mass inspires others. Average persons who open themselves to receive, and are filled with God’s Love can do more than they imagine. Look at the Holy Family – poor and seeming so ordinary – How they loved!

Love diffuses itself. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful. Kindle in us the fire of your Love. Renew the face of the earth through ordinary people with extraordinary love!

Mary, Mother of the Church, Mother of Mercy, pray for us.

Dear Ed,

Thanks so much for your reply and for not only speaking the Truth, but for doing the Truth – being on the front lines at an abortion clinic to pray for those women and children – to help any you can. Yes, the forces of evil have been at work, for decades, but God is also raising up His saints. “Fear not little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom!” (Luke 12:32)

The media are complicit in the way they cover pro-life rallies, I agree. That does not stop the Truth from spreading, however. What does stop the Truth is the reluctance of clergy and laity to speak the Truth! If our pastors do not speak about the evils of contraception and abortion that ought not stop us from speaking the Truth lovingly, perseveringly, and clearly to anyone we can. If clergy do not want to speak about these issues, let us pray for them lovingly and perseveringly, but let us not stop God’s Truth from spreading to counter the lies.

Yes, for God and for the sake of the human family, we need to speak the Truth and overcome evil with good. Thanks for the link to the excellent article from CatholicNews Agency. The devil is the father of lies and he retained angelic power. Still, the devil really is no match for Jesus and Mary, so let us pray our Rosaries with attention and devotion. O my Jesus, pardon us and save us from the fires of hell. Draw all souls to heaven especially those in most need of your mercy.
