Movie: Independence day 2..(thumbs down)

I saw this earlier today with a friend, I had been looking forward to it, since I liked the first one, but was disappointed. I assumed it would be set in present day, but its really not, its about 100 yrs in the future, We have the same kind of tech as they do now. This destroyed the entire movie imo, they made it out to be too much of a sci fi movie instead of your basic invasion on a present day earth.

Thats what made the first one so good, it showed how mankind overcame a global threat with modern day tech, not future tech.

Then they just way off the wall in the end, implying mankind was going to learn how to bring the fight to the invaders home world… GEEZ!

I wont give any major spoliers but dont waste your money its not all it was hyped to be.

It was a box office flop. I’m surprised you were able to find a theatre still showing it; they pulled it from my city weeks ago.

It’s not set 100 years from now. Rather, it is set approximately now, but after the human world has had a generation to absorb the alien technology from the first attack wave.

The guy who got choked out by the alien in the first film wakes up from coma and isn’t even aware that 20 years have passed.

Yeah, I realize that, but its not a present day we are familiar with, I think that was its major downfall, we do not have moon bases, laser guns or anti-gravity vehicles yet. While it does make sense that they do in the movie, that first movie experience and feel is not there, when mankind had to rely on present day technology, stuff we were all familiar with.

Of course the first movie also paused a few times to show how important family, religion, and faith are in a situation like this. the sequel was more 'kill, kill, kill, use bigger weapons, more destruction, etc. The ship was ridiculous too, way too big to be believable, not t mention the size of the queen, why would she be 1000ft tall, when the rest of their species are more like 4ft tall (without their bio-suits), LOL Just a lot of dumb things like that.

It doesn’t make sense that twenty years after an apocalyptic alien attack, which we survive, the world would still look the same. You can bet your boots we would take up all the alien technology we could understand. (Which wasn’t all of it, of course, as we still didn’t have interstellar flight.)

My dh and I saw it and thought it okay–not as good as the original, but then it can be hard to recapture the “vibe” of such a hit as ID was.

To me it lacked characters we could really care about. The guy who played Will Smith’s character’s adopted son (they didn’t have any kids of their own?) was as interesting to watch as a brick. The other young people had their day in the sun in this film, but the filmmakers couldn’t seem to decide whose story they were telling–the fighters or the people on the ground trying to come up with a way to defeat the enemy. It was a mixed bag and not very engaging. Still, it’s worth renting on DVD for a couple hours of diversion for sci-fi fans, although it’s not great movie making. I love Brent Spiner, though. He brought interest and sparkle to the film–almost the only actor who did.

Yeah, the guy I would have sworn was dead in the first movie – If not while the alien was using him as a puppet, at least after a couple of guys popped dozens of rounds through the glass at the alien. Also, he must have been resident at the Coma School Of Cosmetology – They kept his hair, 5 o’clock shadow, and weight exactly the same through 20 years of coma.

Yeah. And how come one man gets choked by the alien and spends twenty years in la-la land, and someone else gets the exact same treatment and is flying a spaceship half an hour later???

Jumping to one’s feet after sleeping for twenty years is one of those human impossibilities.

HA HA, good point, I never thought about that.

The friend I saw it with asked me earlier today if I had caught that statement from the white orb thing, about their race possibly creating mankind, I cant recall the exact conversation when they first activated that ball, but I do seem to recall it saying something implying that mankind was created by either them or another civilization, but I wasnt paying much attention to it at this point in the movie…does this sound familiar to anyone else?

I will rent it when it comes out and see if thats accurate or not.

Well, in sci-fi almost anything is possible re the scientist in the coma for 20 years. It’s plausible if the alien put him in an induced state of mental suspension rather than actually choking him. And the officer who felt his pulse wasn’t a doctor, after all, so he may have assumed the scientist was dead. There are always possibilities in sci-fi, so that wasn’t a problem for me. I can just “go with it” on such things, but the acting was pretty lame and the story not really worth the time. Luckily, my dh and I saw it on a discount day, so we didn’t spend full price to see it.

There were a number of things that didn’t make sense in the universe presented.

If the captured aliens were lethargic after the mothership blew up in the first movie, why did the African country have to lose almost half its population fighting the aliens from the ship that landed in their country?

What did they feed the alien prisoners for 20 years. And why did they leave them their armor?

“We’re slowing down! It has its own gravity!” The 3000mi diameter ship is 1.5 times as wide as the moon, but much thinner (and hollow, so mass wise, it should be much less than the moon, and should exert less gravity than the moon. Meanwhile, we see that not only can the anti-grav engines on the tug fight against earth gravity without trouble (6 times the gavity of the moon) it has a “fusion engine” for more thrust. It should not have been slowed down, nor been held by the ships gravity.

Why was there sound on the aliens’ 3d recording of the president’s independence day speech? I thought the aliens didn’t have ears or vocal cords. Where’d they get the 3d image anyway? It wasn’t even transmitted over 2d (television).

Goldbloom’s father drove from the east coast to near area 51 between the time the ship landed, and the aliens almost destroyed the earth?

Doing what the aliens were doing would not have caused the earth to lose its magnetic field, and even if it did, that wouldn’t cause the atmosphere to escape into space.
