A movie is being shown at our local theater entitled, “One Night with the King” and is supposed to be about the story of Esther. It seems to be quite a production with the usual splashy Hollywood elements but is being promoted by local evangelicals. I believe it was produced by one of their large financial organizations the 3-letter acronym of which I do not recall. I was not able to find any Catholic reviews of this movie but would like to read a knowledgable evaluation before seeing it. Sometimes these people get things right - though usually with a heavy handed, preachy style - at least they aren’t in the limp-wristed style of some Catholic productions. If it is OK, it would be better to see than the typical secular fare.

What do people know about this?

Giving this a bump! Anyone seen it? I saw the director on Hannity and Combes.

I was flipping through the channels the other night, and TBN caught my eye. I was trying to figure out what they were doing. It seems as though they were trying to do a ‘red carpet’ thing like Hollywood does at a grand showing of something. I rmember Pat Boone being there, they called a lot of ‘doctors’ I assumed these were Protestant ministers. Finally I figured out they were talking about the movie you have mentioned. But that is all I know. I do recall this producer made another movie in the 90’s it seems, but I do not recall the name of it.

Anyway, I know I am not much help, but just to say I did see something about it. 😃

Thanks each for your response. I read the review in the Decent Films website and it is quite positive. Sounds like something worth seeing - for a change!!

Well, that was my mistake. :o When I posted my very recent reply I indicated that I had read the review on the “Decent Films” website. Instead, I had read the review on another site (Plugged In Online) in which there was a much more favorable review. If guided by the “Decent Films” review it would definitely not be something worth seeing.:nope:

The production looks pretty good, some major Hollywood veterans are in it, but from what I understand the major characters are played by new unexperienced actors and this hurts the movie. I’ll wait for it to come out on video since my wife and I have a 14 month old. From what Steve Greydanus said on CA that it was just a little weak story wise.

My mom and I saw it tonight and both of us just loved it. Not sure how accurate it is, but all that aside it’s a very good movie. One of the better movies I’ve seen in a good while. The acting is very good, by all the actors. The production is breath taking. I highly re recomend it. Just ignore the critics and judge the movie for yourself. 99.9 percent of the time the critics are wrong.

It sounds as though the movie attempts to make the biblical story one about romance. Personally, I have never seen the book of Esther as remotely romantic.

Young women were not given any chance to refuse the king. They were taken from their home, regardless of their own desires. After a year of preparation for one night with the King, they could be sent back to the Harem and, if the king forgot them, never sleep with another man again.

Esther could not just summon her husband either. That was part of the story, that she was endangering herself at one point, by coming to him unasked.

By making the story a romance, you take away some of Esther’s obvious strength and courage. Here was a woman, who by modern feminist ideas, should have had no power and yet she was able to influence the king and save her people. What a remarkable story just on its own!

I give the movie a 5 star rating. It was definitely one of the best movies I have seen in a looong time.

It was romantic, but I think with the added benefit of very good dialogue and accurate time-period portrayal, the movie was good all around.

The actors were all new but that doesn’t drag the movie down at all! They were very good actors! Especially Esther.

I say you have to go see it!

My wife and I love to go to the movies. Always have. I enjoy the whole experience, shared with quiet strangers in a big dark room. The color, the sound, the popcorn.
Unfortunately, there is about one movie every couple of years that interests us enough to bring us to the theater. Yesterday, after Sunday Mass, we decided to try “One Night With the King.” From a child I have always liked the story of Esther, and looked forward to Haman the Agagbite getting his just reward.
So we went in, sat down with our popcorn, and before the opening credits, in what appeared to be some sort of prologue we saw the pregnant widow of Agag the king of Amelek tripping down a sand dune…and realized that this was going to be not a Bible story, but a bunch of made up stories and conspiracies just based on a Bible story. We were done. We got up and left, and the theatre was real nice about refunding our admission.
What is the matter with the true stories? What I don’t understand is that if Evangelicals made this, don’t they believe in the inerrancy of the Bible? Don’t they know that there is nothing to add to scripture?
