Have yall seen this movie with Mandi Moore in it. am i the only one that found it offensive in some areas and having made a good point in others. its bizaree! it ticks you off and then youre like oh well that makes sense. Anyone seen it?

I’ve seen it, and I know what you mean. I felt offended at times, at least until I reminded myself that it was supposed to be a satire, and then I was better able to see the humor.

The thing is, though, I think I was only mildly offended because the characters are Fundamentalist Protestants, and some of their beliefs, practices and worship styles are so different from ours that I didn’t feel like I was a target. I watched it with two of my friends, who are pretty serious Southern Baptists, and I know they felt more offended than I did.

I guess it’s like when somebody makes fun of your little brother. You’re allowed to do it as much as you want, but heaven help anybody else who dares to! 🙂

I didn’t watch this movie, nor do I have any intention of doing so. I found the advertisements for it already offensive enough. It’s a pity, I used to like Mandy Moore… 😦

I found it to be totally fascinating. As someone else said, I didn’t feel like that much of a target, either…how easy it would have been for the screenwriter to choose the Catholic Church to prey on, and instead parodied the Protestants.

I found it to be unfortunately dead-on in some respects and yes, mildly offensive here and there. But, still totally interesting. I enjoyed it.

I didn’t find the movie offensive, but I didn’t find it that funny either. It did make a few good points that I wish my (Baptist) daughter would see, but I’m not sure that it is appropriate for a tween-ager. What does everyone here think?

I would NOT let any “tween” see this movie. There are some graphic and explicit images that just don’t belong in any impressionable young mind. I think it’s rated R anyway.

I heard the movie was hilarious so I decided to watch it. I watched it and the first half hour I thought it was funny but thenit just got offensive and I was getting mad. I thought it was very offensive.

If all the scenes with the Pastor were removed, it would have fewer negative mesages. It is annoying, and I would not advise it for a young teen. Even then, the negative mesages may need to be discussed with an older teen. But it is not worth viewing for them anyway, I’d say.

It is funny in parts. I understand some of the comic characterizations quite well. But, what can I say? I thought parts of the movie Dogma were hilarious. No, I don’t recommend that, either.:nope:

What about it was offensive? My wife and I have seen the previews and have thought about watching it.

It portrayed all Christians as evil and untolerant and the athiests are portrayed as good and tolerant. The only Christians who are given a favorable portrayal are the ones who reject the teachings of Christianity.

Before watching the movie I went on to Amazon.com and Barnseandnoble.com and looked at reviews of the movie to see what people thought. I saw some that thought it was very offensive. I then watched it and after the first 30 minutes I was thinking that it wasn’t that offensive. I thought it was funny at first, a funny portrayal of the fundamentalists. then it lost the humor and I started to realize what was so offensive toward the end. The last half hour I thought was pretty offensive.

Thanks for the info. I have to admit I wasn’t paying that close attention to the movie, so I guess I must have missed the explicit scenes. My wife noticed the advisory before the movie (Direct TV pay per view), but we couldn’t remember any explicit scenes after it was over. I guess I shouldn’t try to use my computer and watch TV at the same time.

Since I had exposure to people who were ERRILY like some of the characters in this movie, I found it very funny. I think it would be very offensive to fundamentalist non-denom protestants…

i just saw the movie tonight and i was curious as to what all you thought was soo disturbing about it. why was it not acceptable for teenagers to view?? i dont find anything wrong with it… i can understand ppl commenting it may be abit far fetched as in characters… some ppl tend to take those situations or simular ones to that extent but not everyone. either way it still delt with alot of real issues that teens should be aware of and disguss.whether your religious or not, whatever your race, or where ever you live or go to school… everyone deals with the same issues. whats so wrong with it. i thought it was a good movie, both in humour as well as in life situations… it delt about more then just religion…

For example, the movie depicts Christians as clueless about homosexuals. That’s okay, many are! 🙂 But, by the time the movie gets to the denouement at the dance/prom, it feels like the movie becomes an outright attack on Christian belief on the subject. It was not funny when the pastor is standing in the foyer and the bus of people come with the gay man and his new gay boyfriend. The movie at that point makes the pastor pathetic and hence the belief about the bible and homosexuality pathetic. I think most bible believing Christians would be offended at that point. For a bible believing Christian, they would not want their young teen receiving those messages, in general. But, I am Catholic, what do I know? I didn’t like the scene either. Maybe I don’t remember the movie aright.

Um…

the explicit images, not so much the subject matter, is what bothered me.

–a young teenage couple having sex

–images of gay pornography

–camera shot of an aroused young man in boxers.

Just inappropriate and not necessarily needed.

I think that satire in and of itself can push the envelope sometimes. I don’t think that the movie was bad altogether, but I think that it’s effects on the viewer depends on the viewer. If you can handle satire and not have it affect the way you feel about this subjects, then go ahead and watch it. But then you can say that about anything. The lines crossed are very blurry sometimes.

i always hold strong to the idea that fiction is fiction and that it cannot hurt you. i found this movie amusing, even hilarious at times.

I really don’t know what to say. I read a lot of the different posts. The more recent ones express my feelings. It was offensive and then not offensive. At some points it was funyn and then at times I was getting really upset. Yes, glad they finally found someone besides a Catholic to make a satire about.

I found it to be a mockery of salvation. True, it was about evangelicals and not catholics, but it is the same Jesus they were mocking. Besides, many non-christians don’t know the difference between evangelicals and catholics–something like this attacking either mocks Jesus and brings both into disrepute.

Among the other things mentioned above, I found it offensive that the ones who were immoral turned out to be the heroes and the one who appeared to be moral turned out to be the villian.

Bummer too, because I watched it because of Mandy Moore. I used to respect her.

Another good review at…

Blessings to all!
