Has anyone seen this movie? I just saw it before…it was real sad about the cruel environment those girls had to live in…😦

Does the Catholic Church really believe that you have to go through hard labour and for that long period of time in order to get your sins forgiven?

hmmm it was quite sad to see the Catholic Church allowed this… does anyone know much about the situation?

Remember that this occurred in one particular time and in one particular country. That hardly makes it universal Catholic teaching. One only has to read Dickens to see that the world was a different place when the laundries started, with very different ideas about the status of these women and how best to help them.

I read somewhere that when the laundries closed a number of the older women moved into monasteries, having no place else to go. That fact may indicate that things were not as universally bad as the movie portrayed.

Here’s one interesting link:

I watched this recently and was moved almost to tears. What struck me the most was the way these women were scapegoated, especially the first girl who was sent there to get her out of the way for daring to complain about being raped! Thre were no sins here for which the “punishment fit the crime.”

The cruelty and exploitation depicted, as best I can tell, are historically accurate for the situation, although as noted, this is certainly not common to the church. The fact that there was a fairly widespread, systematic abuse like this (even if confined to one culture), in very recent times, that the Church did not step in to put an end to is very disturbing though.

All in all, I found it a distressing commentary on “man’s inhumanity to man” but realize that it sometimes takes films like this and Schindler’s List to remind us and help us to strive to not let these things happen again.

Peace,

First of all this was not a movie about the Catholic Church. This was a movie about a group of nuns who ran laundries and took in women who had been ostracized by the society in which they lived for reasons that are questionable by today’s standards. Were their abuses? Yes. But I question whether they were as wide spread as portrayed in the film. Still, how does one refute it? Did you notice, for instance, that one of the characters represented remained a faithful Catholic her entire life? She was able to differentiate between what was done to her by ignorant people and what the Church actually teaches.

IFC - Independent Film Channel aired this last night. I suppose they will do it again sometime.

I’ve watched it twice…each time my blood runs cold.

However, viewers will associate this with the Catholic Church.

I object to a movie like this because it fuels anti-Catholics and just gives them more ammunition.

I’ve seen it. It was heartbreaking to see what happened to those girls, and I’m glad the Magdalene laundries are closed now. I also agree that this movie was not about the Catholic Church. It was only about a specific group in one specific place. However, many people associate that movie with the entire Church, I think. I’ve read alot of anti-Catholic reviews online associated with this movie.

It is said that the democratic paty can pull defeat from the jaws of victory every time. The Catholic church has developed an ability to arm its enemies and shoot itself in the foot frequently.
This wasn’t the only place it happened British children evacuated to Australia and New Zealand. At the begining of the WWII were taken in by Catholic and Anglican institutios that put them to work ! In laundries and construction .
