Hello, my worry has two parts.
  1. I’m not sure wether things like an actor using Gods name in vain in a line of a movie would be sinful. I’m sure there’ll be a variety of opinions on this matter, so I don’t expect to get much clarity on it.
  2. A worry of mine as of late is the level of cooperation in purchasing a film in which sin was involved to produce it. If it was sinful for an actor to use our Lords name in vain by reading the script, or other more extreme cases of perhaps explicit and immodest scenes, what level of cooperation would the viewer have in the sin? By purchasing the movie, do they help fund the sin? And even if that would only be remote and thus licit to purchase, wouldn’t the viewer assist in the production of further films containing real sin, as most modern movies contain the typical “OMGs” and immodest clothing?

It sounds like you are scrupulous.

You’re way overthinking this, OP.

If a movie causes you to sin, or tempts you, or you’re not comfortable with the content, don’t watch it.
Otherwise we don’t worry about all that other stuff you mentioned, and each person sets their own boundaries according to their conscience and, if they are a minor, their parents’ directives.

Unless you’re a movie actor, you don’t need to concern yourself with whether the actor sins. That’s for him and his priest and his conscience to determine.

I think your post is thoughtful and is similar to what goes through, or should go through, the mind of a Catholic (most just don’t take the time to express it).

Why is the movie so important that you don’t simply find a different one?

For me, long gone are the days when I feel a need to watch films that other people enjoy or are praised by movie critics. Also, it now takes little effort to stop watching it and do something else. What’s the reward for seeing a movie?
