Can anyone direct me to a good website or other place where I can get a list of movies that are recommended to view. Even better if it had corresponding ‘virtues/values exhibited’ type classification system. i.e. So and so movie teaches the value of chastity, etc.

Here’s the link to the Vatican’s top 45 movies, which is divided into three groups: religion, values, and art. There are little descriptions by each title. usccb.org/fb/vaticanfilms.htm

Also, here is a website to the Bishop’s reviews of new and upcoming movies, which contains reviews, ratings, and recommendations. usccb.org/movies/index.htm

This is a great movie, stunningly portrays Saint Thomas Moore.
 
I really like Legally Blond. There were some phrases that were inappropriate (and a teacher who briefly makes a pass at a student), but I love the character of Elle Woods. She likes and is willing to help anyone. She works hard, exceeds people’s expectations of her, and sees that the guy she thought she loved wasn’t really for her. My teen daughter likes the movie for Elle’s clothes and shoes, but I really like the way Elle grows in knowledge of herself and others. I’m sure it’s not up there on the USCCCB list, but I like it. --KCT
 
I mentioned in an earlier thread, the film, Jacob’s Harvest. It is a good prodigal son story put out by Feature Films for Families. You can see a list of their movies here.

Thank you for the replies! The ‘decent films’ site is a great help -

The reason I ask is we want to start up somewhat of a movie club for girls - give a bit of a talk about a particular virtue or other helpful point in life and then have fun with a movie that brings about thought/discussion on whatever the topic was.

I’m particularly interested in non-religious films (like not about a saint, etc.) so the audience can see good example in the modern secular world.

If anyone has specific film titles to recommend that deal with ANY of the following, please let me know!:
  • the privilege/grandeur of service to others,
  • true freedom and making the right choices even if it’s hard
  • balancing life and putting first priorities first
  • working hard to be the best you can
  • chastity

Throw away your plans. We are in the heat of battle. The whole Western world (including our children) suffers from the movie/person pre-severing pornographized mindset. We all have learned through movies the habit of hating mystery. This is why you should throw away your plans.

As I have said before, there are only two filmakers’ who, like Frodo and Samwise, have travelled straight to the heart of the fire to cast in the ring of human pride.

They are: David Lynch and Lars von Trier. There are no movies that have the power that theirs have.

Their movies are for the ‘adult’ and the child in everyone. There is perhaps good reason for believing that even the ‘sinful’ parts of their (at least the Lynch) films ought to be viewed by young persons. But until we decide that question, here are two of the Lynch films that are definitely for children:

The Elephant Man (1980)
The Straight Story (1999)

ET my all time favorite

Cheaper by the Dozen (the original with Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy)

Little Women (yes, the Winona Ryder Susan Sarandon version, another surprise)
