So I recently had an epiphany today after going to Mass… the Lord wants me to slow down, stop getting so ahead of myself, and stop being so serious about everything right now. I honestly think I’ve forgotten how to be joyful and enjoy today for today. When I try to do that, I feel exhausted because I’m so used to taking things so seriously that it’s where my comfort lies (idk if that makes sense…) Does anyone have any suggestions for just letting go, enjoying the moment, and learning to be joyful??

Thanks

I have found my whole outlook on the day and its events changes the larger my smile. I find myself more relaxed and just looking for good things to happen. Simple, yet effective for me.

I find that sometimes I’m in a rush for the sake of rushing. I find it better and easier to just sometimes stop and say “wait why am I rushing to/through this” usually the answer is “I don’t know” so I stop.

How to be less serious? Force yourself to be silly and weird, if only when alone. Make faces at yourself in the mirror. Make weird sound effects for mundane activities. Sing like a goof in the car. All of these are things I do when I’m happy naturally. So I find if I do them they make me happy, if that makes sense. And I’m generally pretty introverted and closed. I’m sure if I can be weird you can too.

Finally, I find that gratitude to the Lord and those around us is the best way to slow down and appreciate each moment. And as you say it takes effort but does seem to get easier.

Start keeping a list of the little things in life that you take for granted, but are grateful for.

Also, unplug for a while, especially from the media. Believe, pray, and help someone in need. That’s what helps me get back to the now.

I heard something on the radio once “if your anxious your in the future, if your regretful your in the past, if Your at peace your in the present”. I can’t agree completely, if your guilty due to sin that isn’t a bad thing, your conscience is convicting you to confess it. But i do think taking the present moment can be freeing when done appropriately. I think some people are a little too in the moment. Others are perhaps a bit too in the past. I’m betting there is a balanced middle ground.

@brit_2911 , I suggest you start obeying the command , " Be still , and know that I am God . "

Let God be God in your life .

You are not called to be your own saviour .

Plus have a look at this adaptation of Psalm 23 - - - - - - - -

The Lord is my Pacemaker by Toki Miyashina

The Lord is my pacemaker – I shall not rush.
He makes me stop and rest for quiet intervals:
He provides me with images of stillness,
Which restore my serenity.
He leads me in ways of efficiency
Through calmness of mind, and His guidance is peace.

Even though I have a great many things
To accomplish each day, I will not fret –
for His Presence is here:
His timelessness, His importance will keep me in balance.

He prepares refreshment and renewal
In the midst of my activity,
By anointing my mind with his oils of tranquility.
My cup of joyous energy overflows.

Surely harmony and effectiveness
Shall be the fruits of my hours;
For I shall walk in His house forever.

St Pio used to advise “pray, hope and don’t worry.”
Not an easy way to be but with faith in our hearts …

Above the clouds the sun is always shining 🙂

First of all don’t worry about being serious either. 😁
Jesus does not smile in any of the icons yet He is good.
Maybe what you need is actually doing things that relax you. Walking in parks would be a good way to start. And listen to some music… And stop thinking that you’re not going anywhere while you’re walking. If you can walk around with a point where you have to get to you will see how it relaxes you.
Do you enjoy cooking? Getting concentrated on doing a recipe is very relaxing (imho…). Just chopping things off, mixing them, then cooking it. And if it is not perfect don’t worry about it. If you will try it again.
God is physically present in our life not just when we walk without stumbling but when we pull ourselves back again. Maybe you’re just too worried that everything you do is not purrfect. Not everything we do has to be like work, like delivering a product or achieving a goal. The effort of our life is also not to cling too tight to it.

Well, it sounds like to me - you enjoyed mass !
I too feel that way, after mass.
I wish I could go more often - but life is hectic -
and the world - isn’t the nicest of places sometime -

I suggest just finding something you enjoy that relaxes you. Doesn’t matter what it is as long as it isn’t sinful.

Some people write. Some people read. Some people do crafty things - beadwork, weaving, sewing (which is what I do), knitting, mosaics, crocheting, wood work, whatever.

If it makes you happy to go pound sand get yourself some kinetic sand or a sandbox.

I read a book once and there was a section on honouring yourself with fun. The author said that she plays with makeup and shoes. Those are her toys. She likes to go into her closet and try on shoes. She said she’s had her face made up at so many makeup counters she could have been charged rent. Sometimes she buys makeup and brings it home to play with it. She said that if you can’t think of anything else to do, you can always get naked. Just take off all your clothes and stand in front of a mirror. She guaranteed there would be something about your body that will make you laugh.
