Hello,
I have been asked to participate in a fund raising event for MDA. Before I agree to do so I want to make sure this organization does not sponsor activities contrary to the Catholic teachings…I am thinking of stem cell research possibly.

Thanks,

It appears from searching MDA’s website for “embryonic stem cells” that they are generally supportive of using embryonic stem cells as a research tool. However, it is difficult to determine from my quick scan whether they directly financially support that research. So they are misguided but not necessarily doing wrong themselves.

Much of the funding goes toward treatment. So there is a similar problem here as with Komen and breast cancer (Komen supports abortion provider Planned Parenthood). With Komen, there are alternate organizations that provide for breast cancer treatment and research without objectionable ties. I don’t know whether the same is true for MDA.

If your focus is on the assistance to disabled persons and there are no alternative organizations worthy of support, it may be acceptable to add your efforts to theirs. Perhaps you could talk to your priest if you still struggle with the issues.

MDA supports embryonic stem cell research. This information is old – they were limited to 75 lines of embryonic stem cells (pre-existing under President Bush). Now that we have another President, that federal ban was lifted. I think it’s safe to assume it’s an organization which participates in stem cell research. Yes, they do fund embryonic stem cell research.
