Does anyone here know the song “In The Quiet” by Liam Lawton? If so, how do you feel about this being a song before mass? And, anyone know where I can get this sheet music at little or no cost? Thanks.

I don’t know about this particular song, I never heard it. However, I went to a website, Sheetmusicplus.com, where I could hear a sample of his other tunes. They sound very nice and probably could be used at Mass. I’d have to look at the words and of course, they’d have to fit with the Scripture readings for the day.

Not only does it have to fit the scripture, you also need to make sure that the lyrics do not run contrary to what the Church teaches. That is an important factor that many seem to ignore.

As I am not familiar with the composer, is he Catholic? Even though you mention singing this hymn before Mass, you still have to look at the doctrinal issues with each song.

Firstly, it’s Father Liam Lawton! - he’s a priest of the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin in Ireland (although he tours a lot promoting his music!). He is a highly regarded composer of sacred music, although it is ‘modern’ style and not really my cup of tea - but it’s by no means unbearable music either!

The song ‘In the Quiet’ comes from his CD entitled ‘Another World’ which was released about 3 years ago. I don’t think you’ll get the sheet music free as copyright is quite tight - the music for ‘Another World’ is published by the Irish Catholic publishing company Veritas, at www.veritas.ie.

I’m not sure if the lyrics are scriptural or not, but they wouldn’t be unorthodox. The song is really about finding a quiet place away from the ‘noise and craziness of modern living’ (as Lawton himself puts it) where one can tune into one’s spiritual side…it’s a reflective piece - Listening to the piece, I think it may be more suitable at an evening Mass when things are winding down!

Fr Lawton is also known for his piece called ‘The Clouds Veil’ (also on ‘Another World’) which supposedly became a mourning song in the U.S. after the Twin Towers tragedy… it is a lovely song of hope. He has also composed a number of Mass settings in English and Irish, as well as numerous other popular pieces such as ‘Hiding Place’ and ‘I Will be the Vine’. His music is very much influenced by traditional Irish music and spirituality… so I think it’s worth investing in a few of his pieces!

He has his own website too at www.liamlawton.com
Hope this helps a bit…
