Lets face it though, it is good and right that nothing intra-mundane satisfies us completely. No person (saving the Triune God), nothing will ever satisfy us. The trouble is people treat objects as gods and people as objects or gods. By slaving after that elusive ferrari or by treating ones spouse as either an object for gratification or contrapuntally, as if they were gods they either only destroy or crush the relationship and too often it is false expectations (fuelled by a sex-obsessed media or a false idea of romanticism) which crushes the relationship.
It is true and right that everything mundane points to a void and an aching in our heart which will only be filled by God…and that is why the Eucharist is such a precious gift as it really is a foretaste of that heavenly banquet which will be enjoyed in Heaven…whoa I am getting carried away now!
I am intrigued by your comments on Lynch and will give his films a try.

John, Reznor is/was NIN. I got rid of my CD after a while cuz, well, it was pretty weak as music goes, and only reflects a single mood, which I have no use for and don’t need music to promote, anyway!
The most recent This Rock, for those who read it, has an excellent article about faith and culture. It mainly addresses movies, but it applies to music as well.
I guess the thing is, music isn’t religion: we aren’t bound to accept the “fullness” of a particular band or style. So you can be a “cafeteria listener” of Radiohead if you want. That’s what LEGAL music download sites are for, after all.

Reznor is N.I.N, though he has other people play some instruments when he tours, since he plays them all on his own in the albums (he’s a very talented, if depressing, fellow). I don’t like any of Manson’s stuff other than Antichrist Superstar, and I can easily see why most Christians would balk at listening to it. I just happen to appreciate darker music, perhaps as a highlight of the human condition. It certainly has the effect of turning me towards God and not away, even though much of N.I.N’s music espescially is very anti-God (Manson is mostly just shock-value).

I don’t think you were getting carried away. Some pretty depressing lyrics. Some really thought provoking lyrics though. Beautiful melodies. I have In Absentia and Stupid Dream. I can’t recall anything off of the two albums that would contradict Catholic faith or morals and the only questionable lyrics are from Lips of Ashes off of In Absentia though I guess that’s only if you give a certain interpretation to the lyrics. My favorite song of theirs would have to be Even less off of Stupid Dream. The chorus is absolutely mind blowing.I’ve heard of porcupine tree but are they depressing enough for me?

Listen to classical stations/buy classical CD’s. There are some magnificent settings to the Mass (Bach’s in B Minor, for example) out there.

I have a son 14 and a daughter 13…No way will I ever allow that kind of music in our home…As long as our children live in our home they will follow the rules, no evil music. Period.
Not only will this type of music put you in darkness…how can people actually buy this stuff…you are supporting satan and his evil works.

Radiohead is my favorite band and, besides pointing out that not all of their lyrics are depressing, of course there isn’t anything wrong with listening to them.
This world contains sadness and suffering and fear and death as well as joy and happiness and optimism, why should our art not reflect that?
EDIT: And the lyrics to ‘We Suck Young Blood’ are about the Hollywood types who use people to get ahead in life.
Also, absolutely laughable that anybody takes the lyrics to ‘I Am A Wicked Child’ literally.
One could have given the lyrics to the Radiohead song Airbag, about the feeling of exhilaration at having survived a car crash
Or Pyramid Song, one of the most lucid descriptions of heaven I have ever heard
