I love music and it is a huge part of my everyday. I am probably listening to it as I post so…

What types of music do you prefer. I love all Christian music especialy the hard core stuff. I like screaming… if its tastefull and not too much. I like emo, screamo and many other genras… I love worship music. The Catholic music scene is quite possibly terrible. I know there are a few but they aren’t my style. I haven’t been Catholic for very long so I still have my other Christian tastes. My favorite band is Emery and I recomend them. They are very mellow and have great melodies. I am 20 and my parents can’t stand my music but they don’t really go to church anymore. I never really got into the Christian rap scene but I used to listen to it before I came to faith. Lets discuss music…

I like “proper” singing because I took voice lessons and, well, I’m like that. I don’t particularly care for screaming, but I am impressed at how long and consistently some of those guys can scream and not become hoarse.

So far the only screaming that I really am used to is the kind like Sam Kinison used to use in his stand-up comedy. A good example of it in a musical context is his version of “Wild Thing,” with Billy Idol, Aerosmith, and Jessica Hahn (of Jim Bakker fame).

I like mostly classical music, and 70s-80s type rock, because that’s what I’m used to. Christian musicians, on the whole, do not impress me because they see so mediocre. For CCM, I tend to think there are two branches: Rich Mullins, and virtually All Others.

One thing I no longer like having music playing as background, most of the time, like I used to 20 years ago when it was presumed that when you visit someone, you listened to music, perhaps watched TV with the sound off, and smoked pot. Now, I either want to listen to the music or I want it turned off so I can have conversation with a better signal to noise ratio.

Modern rock has some good points. Often I tell my son of some new philosophical theory I’m learning inspired by lectures and study, and he then tells me that’s just like something that “Maynard” said, either in lyrics or prose. Maynard, as I understand, was lead singer in Tool and Perfect Circle.

A year or two ago I went to a Sevendust concert with my kids; I’d never heard their music before. I was pretty manic at the time, and did some pretty bizarre things at the concert. I did enjoy being around all those young people having such a good time. They actually formed a circle and watched when I went on a tirade about sin and forgiveness during a break. 😛

Instrumental music is so much different than music with words. When it has words, it ostensibly “means something” but without words, you simply experience it for what it is; it is an end in itself whose “meaning” is simply realized in the hearing. It has no meaning beyond itself.

Yesterday I read that Pope Benedict likes to play piano, and his favorites are Mozart and Beethoven. I play for Mass at St. Anthony’s in two hours, and I think today I’m going to play some Mozart and/or Beethoven before or during Mass in his honor. For Beethoven, I’m thinking either the first movement of Moonlight Sonata, or the second movement of the Pathetique Sonata. For Mozart I’m not really sure. Most of what I know of Mozart is too “giddy” to play during Mass, probably, but I think I have some suitable music I could get up to speed if not this week then maybe next.

I like almost everything.

Ooo, and last night I got to go to the opening night at the Hollywood Bowl and Joshua Bell (violinist) played. He was AMAZING!!! For part of it, it looked like he was playing a guitar too, one of the best performances I have ever seen!

Well I like most classical music… Its best to study to… and read too. I like to run and do athletics with my harder stuff… When the music is intence I start running harder and I get pumped up. Music to me is essential and I live and die on good lyrics. Emery my favorite band is very poetic and I just love how they incorporate the backup vocals and they just flow. The occasional screaming isn’t over the top and also flows nicely… Emery isn’t necesarily Christian but the guys in the band are all Christian… The lyrics are clean and they won’t dramatize anyone compared to certian rap songs played on the radio.

Mostly, I listen to Classical or Country.

Most of the time when I listen at work to my CD’s, it is my classical ones. It helps me concentrate on my duties.

As far as rock music, I have a lot of groups I like a lot. My “official” favorite would probably have to be Rush.

That said, there are times my favorites cycle through Queen, Tull, Kansas, some Zappa, and I like Harry Chapin.

I will try this “Emery” and see what it sounds like. I’ve never heard of them, but then again I don’t keep up with whatever is playing these days.

I love sacred polyphony (Monteverdi rocks!). I love Early Music and Renaissance Music - particularly music that was composed for dances. I love Baroque music. I had my Classical period way back when I was a teenager. I like a good bit of modern “classical” music - Orff in particular. I really do love Gorecki but it will send me into a tailspin so fast that I can’t listen to it.

I love Celtic music. I love South American music from the Andes - what happy music! Guilty pleasures - OK I love English folk rock - Steeleye Span, Albion, Gryphon. I have listend to and bought Mike Oldfield’s albums for a long, long time.

It would be quicker to say what I don’t like in music: opera (except Wagner) and country-western. Even CW has exceptions: Dixie Chicks, Kentucky Headhunters, and Charlie Daniels. I love most rock, especially metal, but punk is not usually for me, nor is death-metal, and I’m not fond of boy bands or the fluffy pop my girls love.

What am I listening to most often? Lately it’s Catholic-oriented: traditional hymns, John Michael Talbot, Critical Mass, Backyard Galaxy. I also listen to a group called Minstrels of Mayhem, a group that goes to Renaissance and Medieval festivals. Some of their songs are racy, one is frankly X-rated (don’t listen to that one anymore), but they are great singers and have a good sense of humor. Not to mention a good sense of period music. Plus I am listening to Michael Card. This works well on my 6-CD player, so I always have a variety going.

I also love Mannheim Steamroller - anyone else out there?
