Is there any type of music that catholics should not listen to?

Is there any genre of music which is definitely a sin? No.

Christians are not obliged to stay away from art. Rather, we are to enjoy it responsibly. You’ve probably heard the relevant passage, Philippians 4:8: “…whatever is true, whatever is modest, whatever is just, whatever is holy, whatever is beautiful, whatever is of good reputation – if there be any virtue or any praise of discipline, think of these things.”

Quite a lot of music has something of those qualities. You probably naturally prefer what does. (Remembering Chesterton’s dictum that beauty also includes the grotesque – which is why those funky gargoyles fit on cathedrals.)

You are responsible for your own spiritual development. If you find yourself listening to music which promotes creepy ideas, says horrible things about women, or is doing its darnedest to be an occasion of sin, it’s your job to decide whether you should be listening or not. There may well be good reasons for you to do so: learning better songwriting, understanding the current state of music, and so on. But that’s for you to decide. (Along with your parents, if you’re still under their care!)

It is also possible to get too attached to all sorts of material things, and music is one of them. But music is also one of God’s good gifts of creativity to humanity. Again, you just have to balance this for yourself.

rock music is evil because of the sensuouse beat, encouraging the listener to give in to their impulses and addicting them to the adrenaline rush…right? 🙂

??? Where on earth did you get that idea? No genre of music has exclusive claim to anything of the sort. If it is an occassion for sin for you, then by all means don’t listen to it… but it may inspire others in a good way.

From the little smiley guy at the end of the post, and the name “cynic”, I took this to be facetious. I do think he’s joking.

Music is generally a matter of taste. I don’t think anyone should listen to music that denigrates people, suggests violence…stuff like that. But most genres of music have good and bad examples.

Guess I was having a “blonde” moment… trust me, it’s a difficult thing for a redhead!
