Hi
Are there any other ‘musos’ on this forum? What instument(s) do you play, what equipment do you use, what style of music do you play, how long you been playing and do you still practice / play in any groups or bands? Come in n compare and contrast, n talk to other musos about it!

I play the keyboard, guitar, electric bass, flute, and harmonica. At the moment bass is my main instrument. I have a 5 String Cort and a 15W Peavey amp. I’ve been playing bass for about 2 years, although I prolly don’t practice as much as I should. I like to play pretty much any kind of rock and also some classic heavy metal (how great is the ‘My Friend of Misery’ riff?), and I’ve been trying to learn a bit of jazz. I’ve also played bass at church and at youth groups and retreats which means I have played tons of hymns and Christian songs, but don’t normally use tabs or sheet music for that, I just play based on the chords.

I have a keyboard borrowed from a relative and I used to have an organ that some nuns gave away because it didn’t work very well. I leanred piano on and off for a few years when I was younger. I mostly play classical music on the keyboard and a bit of other stuff, whatever sheet music I find (Christmas carols anyone? I love ‘Deck the Halls’!) I’ve played a few hymns on the organ at church too.

Other instruments, I mostly just muck around on, haven’t played too seriously. But if anyone knows where I can find simple sheet music (ie, vocal lines) for common Catholic hymns I might know, especially if it’s for free on the internet, please let me know - it would be good for practicing the flute and harmonica.

I’m a violinist. That’s all I play really and that’s all I’m good at. Always wondered if playing Tartini’s Devil’s Trill sonata was a sin.

I have a modest personal recording studio. I play guitar (have a Les Paul & SG) and Keyboard (Ensoniq MR 76) with various Korg & Roland modules. Being a Beatles fan I play alot of their songs along with the Eagles, Steely Dan, Bee Gees (early stuff) and Bob Seeger. I have also taken on a couple of recording projects as I have (PC based) digital recording capabilities. I am self taught on both the guitar and keyboard although I am a strong proponent of taking professional lessons so as not to develop/reinforce bad habits. Having said that though, there are many instructional books and DVD’s available that I must say are quite good.

My husband and I are trombonists, but I’m sad to say that since we’ve moved into our new house a few months ago, they’ve been in the attic! We have 4 trombones between the two of us, so we always joke that our first two kids at least will have to play the trombone, too, so we won’t have to buy additional instruments 😃 My husband also plays the keyboard, bass guitar, regular guitar (electric and acoustic versions) and sings. But his main music-love at the moment is composing using Finale software. He wrote some of the organ music played at our wedding:love:

I play flute in both a wind ensemble (what we used to call a band) and a quartet.

In band we play, well, band stuff…some marches, some ballads, other band stuff.

The flute quarted seems to specialize in Baroque Music, which is fine with me. I love that stuff, particularly the fugues!

For classical, Mozart is GREAT, but he composed for the violin principally, so much of what is available is a rewrite. Funny thing: violins can breathe whenever. Flutes need air. Mozart is NOT fun on the flute! Beethoven got it a bit better. He, at least, built in places to breathe!

I LOVE my flute!!! It is something so totally away and apart from my career and life…something for me.

I’m primarily a vocalist and guitarist, but I play several other stringed instruments (Appalacian dulcimer, hammer dulcimer, autoharp, folk harp, some piano).

I have sung in public for about 42 years and have played guitar (trained classically, now I play fingerstyle) for nearly 40 years. I used to make my living playing in nightclubs and toured quite a big and did some studio work.

At present I have four guitars (all acoustic): two Martins, one Ovation, and one unidentified classical.

The only place I sing (and sometimes play) now is church. My choice – I decided to retire from secular music a few years ago.

Currently have a house full of instruments…

five guitars
three mandolins
three trumpets
one 5-string banjo
one fiddle
one electronic keyboard

…and I play 'em all (some better than others 😃 )!

Primary instrument is the mandolin, which I play in both bluegrass and acoustic country/rock (Eagles, CSNY, Pure Prairie League, Dylan, etc. - that sort of stuff) settings.

My main axe is a 1987 Flatiron A-5 mando (boy, she’s a real American-hand-made beauty!).

For straight-up bluegrass it’s purely acoustic (playing bluegrass through amplified instruments is something that you just don’t do!); for the other stuff I play through a Crate CA112D acoustic amp with a surface-mount McIntyre pickup mounted on the ol’ Flatiron.

Havin’ an absolute ball gettin’ back into playing in public after a 20-year or so hiatus!

Electric bass myself, though I don’t own one these days. I’ve played in a couple different bands, mostly hard rock types with one serious metal band in there (for which I also did lead vocals, quite badly).

I started developing carpal tunnel in my left wrist and had to stop playing. I played for about fifteen years or so when I sold my gear. I had a Fender short scale bass and 200 watt Japanese amp (I can’t remember the make). I used chorus and distortion pedals on occaision. I went to a short scale bass in an effort to ease the carpal tunnel.

The best gear I ever owned was a beautiful Ibanez bass with a Crate amp, which is what I had with the metal band. I almost weep thinking of that bass and the way it just fit me. I could play things on that instrument I could never play on any other.

I’ve spent a bit of time in the recording studio, but not a lot. I’ve lost my copy of what the band recorded and have lost touch with all the other members. The band was called Smoke Factor. I’ve never looked for it, but there’s enough copies around that someone might have put it online by now. Heck, we even managed to get a couple of our songs played in a local talent feature on a Vancouver radio station. Ah the not-so-good ole days.

So anyone have any horror stories of truly awful stage experiences?

I play the Eb Horn (“Tenor Horn”) and I’m now learning pieces for my Grade 6 Exam and Swing Band 👍

I’m a classical vocalist a countertenor as my nickname states. I play violin, viola and piano. I love to sing Renassaince polyphony and baroque sacred cantatas. I sing with Cantores in Eclessia in Portland, Oregon. As well as in my university’s chamber choir. Music is a wonderful thing. Send me your prayers, I’m auditioning for my master’s program as well as a teaching assistantship so that I can afford my master’s program in a couple weeks.

I play piano, but for the last eight years I’ve worked a desk job sitting at a computer for so many hours a day, I couldn’t bear to sit in the same position when I came home! We’re expecting our first baby in April, and I’ve stopped working now, so the piano will be tuned next Tuesday, and I’ll be out of excuses! I’ve also started learning to play the classical guitar, but so far I’m only learning exercises.

I just bought my husband a new steel string guitar for Valentine’s Day since this is the last time I’ll have such a stash of personal cash to do such a thing! It’s a Seagull brand, handmade in Canada. A very good buy! He adores it!

Every now and then you come across a story that just pulls at the heart strings; this was the one for me. Two people in love, sharing the gift of music and soon to be parents; it doen’t get any better than that! The Seagull guitar for Valentine’s Day was over the top!
It’s moments like this that I can sit back with my morning coffee, take a deep breath and believe all is right in the world. What a nice way to start the day! Thanks! 🙂

hey beesweet, found ya! lol… glad your man is enjoying his canadian born guitar! we do things better here in canada, ya know! lol

Oboe.

But I’m really out of practice. I only recently started to practice again and my embouchure is so weak! I can only play for a few minutes.

I was pretty good in college but that was a “few” years ago.

I’ve been thinking about taking private lessons again.

Hi!

I’m hobbyist composer. I play the piano though.

My studio equipment:

M-Audio Radium 69
Reason 3.0
Cubase
EWQLSO
Stormdrum

I write mostly: orchestral filmscores, trance, RnB, hip-hop, and rock/pop. I write only Euro club trance. I love trance a lot especially when smoking weed. J/ K 🙂

I’m a singer. I take voice lessons at my music school in the area I live in, and I sing mostly older 60’s songs, and many musical things. It’s quite fun.

I play piano,drums,guitar,and hand percussion.My keyboards are:Yamaha motif ES-7,Yamaha S-30,Korg Triton extreme,Korg 01-W,a sound module Korg X5DR.Mi guitars are a black acoustic electric from Ovation,an electric Epiphone(black),an electronic drum kit Roland with a TD-7 sound module.Hand percussion:Congas,bongos,cow bells,chimes,tambourine,all LP.I play all styles of music,from rock to ethnic,but I have a special love for latin music(born in Spain)😃

I play the flute. Anyone like to hear some Jethro Tull, Thick as a Brick?

I played pedal steel guitar in country bands for over 25 years, but due to older age, and hardly having a weekend off, I retired. It was really fun, but I was tired of the baroom/club scene. So I sold everything. I do wish I had my Fender Twin amp back. It now sells on e-bay for over two thousand dollars. Oh well.
