Re: Kazan Cathedral, I had in mind the one one on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, which is now back on duty as a church, I believe.

The important thing I think some people missed in those times is that the Russian people themsleves are often hugely warm and generous, especially with food and drink. And, clearly, Russian orthodox faith did not die out, despite the persecution.

I agree with JHow on this one. It seems to me the closer a look you take at the Soviet Union (and other communist countries such as China) the more you realize you are dealing with an unmitigated horror. If half the things in Gulag Archipelago are true, then it’s not a regime I would want anything to do with.

By the way, did your wife live in Russia under communism? What is her take on it? Many people who’ve lived under communist regimes, I’ve noticed, are the first ones to denounce communism.

I have read excerpts from Solhetziyen’s book, but he immigrated later to Canada…he said after awhile to prefer living back in the USSR because the sufferings there brought him closer to God. America has not exterminated its own people, had concentration camps, and has been there so many times to help those in need in this world.

And it has not spread the propaganda as the former USSR did. I worked in an African country, and only in the past year was I able to see what the Marxists did to the Christians in that country; pictures were shown of Russian ships leaving with food grown there, and the natives left with little.

I look at socialist Europe and how the government takes care of everyone and they do not need God.

Last night I met a Russian immigrant woman who formerly lived in Uzbetzikan…sorry about the spelling here…she said the Moslems there are nothing like what we are seeing. She also spoke of Turkey and America’s alliance with it. Turkey has quite its own history going way back.

Tonight on television, we heard a moderate Muslim speak. He says the West does not realize the civil war that is happening right now within Islam. And he said his Muslim family had to flee this oppressive Muslim government. He said Muslims need to openly stand up to help those Muslims who are being oppressed by these governments, particularly Saudi Arabia and Iran as does the USA. Iran wants the total annihilation of every Jew on the earth, and it is what caused the new bloodshed in Iraq after the fall of Saddam, and it is Iran that is afflicting Israel through Hezbollah and Hamas.

But the political/theological force headed by various groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and others are winning the propaganda war for these oppressive governments with the assistance of the Left in this country.

As far as which country lies more, it is more the force of power. When the force of power comes, as John Paul II said in Veritatis Splendor, truth goes out.

The US ‘won’ the ‘cold war’ and what a relief that was. Would you have regarded it as a happy outcome if it had been the other way around? To pretend that the US and the USSR are comparable cannot be regarded as reasonable. In East Germany one is six people were spying for the state against their friends, neighbours and colleagues, and this was supposed to be among the most advanced countries in the red empire. The US had no systems of gulags or spying by ordinary citizens to identify those opposing it. Stalin starved his own people by choice at a time when the US goverment was seeking to ‘put a chicken in every pot’ and save its people from depression.
Much of the ‘evil’ done by the US was only necessary to defend itself from a far greater evil, world communism and we should all be thankful to it.

Do anything that threatens the Saudi dictatorship and the Americans will kill you and your family, bomb your cities and destroy your country, depending on how seriously they think the threat is. People in the Middle-east have been terrorised by the US for decades to stop them challenging the US-backed dictatorships in the region which make sure the profits from the oil go to the US and Western Europe rather than to the people of the region. It’s been one long story of repression, invasions, coups, assassinations and massacres directed at civilians, so it’s difficult to do anything. But they’re still trying and God willing will succeed in bringing down the tyrants. Praise be to God much progress has been made in the last 10 years in resisting US imperialism there. The US-backed military juntas have been smashed in Turkey and it now has some independence; Hezbollah have cut the Israelis down to size and protected Lebanon from US-Israel invasion; the Iraqi resistance forced the Americans to withdraw from Iraq without achieving most of their aims; the US-backed Saudi bombing of Yemen is not working in breaking the resistance there and even the US-backed Mubarak dictatorship in Egypt is having problems.
You’re right man. Screw the US! The US has terrorized the Middle East for decades so let’s persecute some innocent cute little Filipinos (my people 😦 ) .

Would you mind pointing out where good government exists in the islamic states? They are almost all dictatorships, absolute kingdoms or ‘mock democracies’ (Iran). Only Turkey appears to have a democratic government and now that it has an Islamic one, it will make sure that it won’t lose any future election. The Sunnis hate the Shia (and vice versa) and the non-Arabs hate the Arabs (and vice versa) and they all despise Pakistanis whose many governments has been an international joke for years and who have all lived off US aid as they still do.
Get real, the West (including the residents of Birmingham UK) needs oil or everything stops, the two big producers are Saudi and Iran. What is the west to do? Encourage a ‘pure’ islamic government in Saudi who might cut off our (your) supply.
The US didn’t put the Saudi ‘royal family’ in power (though it can be blamed for the Iranian government). In Saudi it was, as usual, in a then primitive and undeveloped country - the strongest group takes power and then keeps it. We have to deal whoever has the oil our (and your personal) economy perishes.
I believe that it is likely that Iran and Turkey will combine to remove the perceived hegemony of Islamic power from Saudi by attacking it and setting its oilfields on fire permanently at some point - the deal being Turkey will take the western islamic ‘empire’ including North Africa for the Sunnis and Iran the east of it for Shia (get prepared to convert to Shia when you go home to Pakistan - you might look back with nostalgia on Saudi power !)
Take a look at Walid Shoebat on youtube (an ex-muslim terrorist who seems to know what’s going on in the horrible islamic empire)
Turkey’s not that bad. And they use the Latin alphabet as opposed to the non sensical arabic script.

I dunno dude, for me its just hard to see where the letters connect. I like the latin script with the clear punctuation and spaces and stuff.

I tried studying Arabic some years back, and while I failed miserably and couldn’t survive in an Arabic country for two minutes, the study I did do of the alphabet helped it make sense. As a Semitic language, it has a lot of similarities with Aramaic and vowel-pointed Hebrew. It’s not that bad in the long run.

Naive? No, totally realistic. We know where the Red Empire was. Where is the US empire? It never existed outside your imagination. There really were good guys in that ‘war’ and they won. Thank God.

Jharek,

I have been out…Catholic to Catholic…what do you perceive as american propaganda…I am in no position to debate that…I just want to know, to understand and see how others perceive us…

I also try every day to live, as Sr Faustina said…to live through Christ’s power and not my own…want to be a universal and apostolic Catholic…Christ is the only solution to the world’s problems…

So again, if you could please share your understanding of American propoganda…because there is always this force in the world…Satan the prince of this world …manifesting itself through power and greed…and as Pope John Paul said, … when power comes in, truth leaves.

I wholeheartedly agree.

I believe it was also helped by Catholics around the world praying for the conversion of Russia with our Lady of Fatima.

Jharek, I would think that Communism’s slaughter of millions of its own people, the seizures of churches, brainwashing children to have their parents arrested for having a Bible in their homes would give us some inkling there are some Christians in Russia.

“No compulsion in religion”? The mind boggles.

I wonder if anyone has published a report ranking countries on the state of their religious freedom and if so I wonder where SA would fall on that list?

Must be tied to their Wahabbism which if I understand it correctly is a particularly nasty form of fundamentalism.

Freedom House, a non profit, non partisian organiztion, ranked most of the countires. Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway and the United States shared No. 1 ranking for religous freedom.

Countries where religious freedom is worsening: China, India, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

SA ranks 7. 1 being the best. 7 being the worst.
No muslim country received a score under 4. By the parameters of this report, that means no muslim country is considered “religously free” (a score of 3 or less).

I was in our local Cathedral on that day in March 84. The local bishop was not at all happy apparently but did the consecration anyway. Result - communism imploded totally and unexpectedly, no foreign relations expert had predicted it but I did. I told people that it would happen and they didn’t believe it would. They accepted that it had, after the event, but were quite certain that Our Lady had no hand in it!

Pretty damning.
Nah, clearly some Zionist plot to distract the world from the fact that Israeli soldiers are eating Palestinian babies on plates supplied by the American government…
