The subject line shocked me – for sure! But, then I read the article. lol

It wasn’t “Muslim Named Head of Catholic College,” it was “Muslim made head girl of Catholic college.” “Head girl” as in an honorary or elected position for a STUDENT (like valedictorian or student body president) she was voted to this position by her fellow students (who were 90% Catholic) in this case. It happened in Wellington, New Zealand – not the U.S.A. – so I imagine the shock of this particular issue has more to do with the (very) slight language barrier (“Head Girl” vs “Class President” or “Miss Congeniality” or something like that.)

Interesting stuff though. 😉

May the Lord be with you all!

Re-read the article.

It is saying that a Muslim girl has been named top student, NOT head of the school.

Whew! That’s in India. I don’t know anything about the culture in India or at their colleges. Furthermore, in some countries, “college” refers to what we call high school or boarding school. Maybe that is what is going on here.

Talk about confusing! It is not clear what country we are talking about, what level of education (university or high school), and “head of college” is not the President but the top student. Things are what they seem–especially from a headline.

It appears to be in Wellington, New Zealand and it is most probably a seconday school since you wouldn’t have a head girl/boy at university. In British English “college” often refers to a secondary school not university. A Head Girl is a student leader, choosen for good character and academic ability. The Head Girl and Boy serve as rolemodels for the rest of the students.
