Having a reasonable conversation over of whyislam.org… a Muslim asks this:

*“Meaning, nothing man alone does can result in the forgiveness of sins.” *My initial question, “Can you quote some verses from Tanach that support this idea ?.”

This then followed:

The weblinks do no address this issue from the Tanach. My question once again was this. Does Tanach teach that anything you do can result in forgiveness ?.
(You) insisted that there is nothing a man can do to get forgiveness. My initial question was whether the Tanach support such idea.
I understand from the Tanach that God requires the Jews to follow the law and there are condemnations associated with not following them. However, what verses in Tanach can be referenced to understand that God requires perfection from human ?.

A couple references have been posted Isaiah 64 and this link:

I’d like to provide one more reply then move on.

Hi there, LtTony -

It is true that only God forgives sin. However in the book of Leviticus, chapter 4, God prescribes to Moses methods for forgiveness of sin. As a matter of fact, all of chapter 4 is dedicated to human actions that result in the forgiveness of sin by God as prescribed by God to Moses. I’ll take some passages here, but read the whole thing so you can understand more fully.
Leviticus 4:1 The LORD said to Moses,

2 "Tell the Israelites: When a person inadvertently commits a sin against some command of the LORD by doing one of the forbidden things,
3 if it is the anointed priest who thus sins and thereby makes the people also become guilty, he shall present to the LORD a young, unblemished bull as a sin offering for the sin he committed. 4 Bringing the bullock to the entrance of the meeting tent, before the LORD, he shall lay his hand on its head and slaughter it before the LORD…

13 "If the whole community of Israel inadvertently and without even being aware of it does something that the LORD has forbidden and thus makes itself guilty, 14 should it later on become known that the sin was committed, the community shall present a young bull as a sin offering. They shall bring it before the meeting tent, 15 and here, before the LORD, the elders of the community shall lay their hands on the bullock’s head. When the bullock has been slaughtered before the LORD,…

20 doing with this bullock just as he did with the other sin-offering bullock. Thus the priest shall make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven."
This should actually end your discussion rather abruptly. If not, then move on. The person you speak with is to stuborn to move.

For this particular question, Jim look to Leviticus once again. Chapter 19, verses 1&2.
1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Speak to the whole Israelite community and tell them: Be holy, for I, the LORD your God, am holy.
This instruction to Moses is the central theme of the whole book After this, God restates His commandments. If you read chapter you should find your answers.Subrosa
