In posting on the ‘muslim’ thread about polygamy, I started thinking over the similarities between muslims and mormons, both in my view heresies that sprouted from the Christian faith.
  1. Both have leaders who wrote/had visions where they received the text of/ a ‘new’ book that overrides the old and new testaments of the Bible
  2. Both were charismatic leaders who quickly attracted followers who saw them as prophets.
  3. Both were warrior-types. Read some of the history of the mormons to find the warlike statements of J.Smith. Of course, we all know about Muhammad’s conquests.
  4. Both practiced polygamy and saw it as a re-instatement of a tradition from Old Testament times.
Comments?
 
I think those are some excellent observations. A couple more similarities:

1.) Both the Qu’ran and the Book of Mormon were supposedly delivered by an angel.

2.) Both religions are careful to marginalize the importance of Christ. The Muslims say He was one of many prophets, the Mormos say He was/is one of many gods.

In my opinion it’s just more proof that Satan is up to his old tricks: Pose as the latest and greatest thing, keep the attractive parts of a faith that work while corrupting the truth, and confuse good and evil.
 
Two more similarities:
  1. Both Mormonism and Islam deny the virgin birth of Jesus.
  2. Only in Mormonism and Islam is a “martyr” someone who dies while killing other people.

I always understood that Islam began as a Jewish heresy and protest against some practices of the Jews in the time and place of Mohammed. enlighten me, please

***I’ve heard that theory, too. I’ve read that Mohammed’s first intent was to convert Jews.

The reason I see Islam as a Christian heresy is because it contains many of the heresies floating about at the time, and also includes references to Jesus and Mary, which Judaism as practiced at the time would not.

I’m an ex-Mormon. Very interesting subject. Another similarity that I haven’t seen mentioned (although minor) is the rejection of any alcoholic beverages by both groups.

Actually Muslums accept the Virgin Brith.
 
Yes that is true, Muslims do accept the virgin birth, and revere Mary as one of the greatest among women.

Do you have any authoritative sources for this? My two Muslim co-workers (from Pakistan) insist that Jesus, while a great prophet, was not divine and was the son of Joseph.
The do revere “The Lady Mary”, though.

The Qur’an describes that an angel appeared to Mary, to announce to her the “gift of a holy son” (19:19). She was astonished at the news, and asked: “How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?” (19:20). When the angel explained to her that she had been chosen for the service of God, and that God had ordained the matter, she devoutly submitted herself to His will.

Your premise that Islam is a Christian heresy is well founded. Many of the heretics that were prsent in the Byzantine empire were shipped off to the Red Sea Coast of Arabia. It was literally the Botany Bay of the Byzantines. The result of this is having people preaching imperfect versions of Christs Teachings (Arianism, Gnosticism, etc…) This must have had a profound influence on the pagan Mohammed.
 
I’ve noticed that both religions have holy books that not only “override” the Bible, but completely contradict it in some cases.

Examples:

The Koran claims that Abraham was asked to sacrifice Ismael, not Isaac as in the OT.

The Koran (or at least Islam) claims that Jesus did not die on the cross, but rather one of his disciples disguised as him.

The examples Paul Dupre gives of Mormon doctrine claiming that Jesus and Satan are brothers and Jesus was the natural conception resulting from relations between God and the Blessed Mother.

It seems to me also that Martin Luther also skated dangerously close to this as well with his denouncements of the epistle of St. James and his elimination of the other canonical books.

Hi Todd,
I printed this and showed it to my two muslim co-workers. As it turns out, neither one had ever read the Qur’an and didn’t really care. They consider themselves “secular muslims” and don’t believe in miracles. Thanks for pointing out what real muslims believe.

Here’s another similarity: both cults excessivley control the sexuality of their members and both promise a paradise of perpetual copulation for the devout or “exalted.”

This is a great point. Their theologies regarding heaven are completely antithetical to Christian theology. This to me is another indicator that the Mormon and Muslim “books” don’t come from God. After all, the temptation of the flesh is the most common tactic of old red-legs.
