I am 72 years old. Since my husband died two years ago I cannot sit through Mass without crying. I’m embarrassed but cannot stop. We were happy in Mass and it is too sad without him. Must I go to confession to receive Communion?

Every Catholic, no matter the age, who has committed a mortal sin must go to confession, particularly before receiving Communion. Not attending Mass on Sundays and holy days without just cause is indeed a mortal sin, but it sounds like you haven’t been attending Mass because you become ill from grief over difficult memories. I do recommend going to confession and explaining the situation to a priest, both for his assessment of the situation and for his counsel. I also recommend finding a grief counselor who can help you master your emotions so that you can again attend Mass. The Pastoral Solutions Institute, a Catholic counseling apostolate, may be able to offer more personalized assistance. God bless.
