My 5 year old this year wants a Jesse Tree so we’ve had lots of fun making decorations ( we’ve decided we will put the decorations on daily and read the little story in the bible that corresponded with the picture) he also wanted an advent wreath another thing mummy got to make.
Then he wanted a nativity scene ( mum was naughty and brought one) then he wanted an advent calendar with chocolate in it so he could have the chocolate after the night time readings he wants me to do.
He understands that Christmas is a celebration of Jesus’s birthday so geuss what of course there is cake other than what’s listed above and all the church masses ( we’ve already gone over the calender and marked them all so nothing gets forgotten.) Is there anything else he’s missed.
According to him when he’s older he wants to be a priest and I know he tries so hard to be a saintly. He says Grace every night and his rosary gets pulled down most days ( even if after the 10th hail Mary he forgets what he’s up too)
He really has brought me closer to God he enjoys bible stories before bed and tv time is usually bible stories or Thomas the tank engine ( he’s always chosen what he wants to watch) and he’s a bit upset he’s to young for reconciliation and holy communion ( apparently he has sinned by not always being the best version of himself and not always being a nice friend or little brother to his siblings and he used some not very nice words and had to sit in time out he told his older brother that his older brother was not being a very good catholic :0 . I explained beacuse he was little he could pray to God and ask for forgivness but apparently this is not the same as reconciliation.)
Has he missed any thing important for advent ( I know he will be devastated if he has)
And is there anything I can say or do to help him be happy about not going to reconciliation or receiving the Eucharist he does enjoy going up for a blessing at mass and is always one of the first ones up.
I feel so blessed to have a child like this who has truly brought our family closer to God how ever I don’t like seeing him upset as he cannot do things his older brother can

We completly forgot about the O Antiphons

Thankyou @SuscipeMeDomine

The immaculate conception always gets some difficult questions to answer in our house.
5 year old came to first communion class with me and mr 11 were mr 5 learned that while Mary was pregnant she went to stay with her cousin Elizabeth ( John the Baptists mother) for 3 months
Mr 5 keeps asking how could Mary stay with Elizabeth for 3 months with baby Jesus in her tummy if the immaculate conception is on the 8th of December and he was born on Christmas day

I did try to explain that mabye it was 3 weeks and not 3 months but he said that that still did not fit

Each of the links I provided goes to family or home activities you can check out.

The Immaculate Conception can be difficult to explain to a child. We’re so focused on Christmas at that point that it’s hard for them to remember that we’re talking about Mary’s conception, not Jesus’. Maybe you can figure out a way to tie the Immaculate Conception to Mary’s birthday in September.

Dumb Ox Publications has a lovely Advent calendar and a 12th Night calendar. Both make Nativity scenes and your son can colour the characters. I am really only familiar with the Advent one as we used it when I was a child. On December 1 you add the Star of Bethlehem. From the 2nd to the 14th, you add stable animals. (Each night has a short prayer either written on the piece itself or on the calendar, as we’ll see later.) On the 15th you add St. Joseph. The 16th you add Our Lady and begin the Christmas novena. Each night, after you pray the novena prayer, you put a coloured star sticker on the calendar. From the 17th to the 23rd you add the O Antiphons. These are actually stickers that are placed above the stable; the prayers are written directly on the calendar. On the 24th you add the angel and finish the Christmas novena. Lastly, on Christmas day you add the Christ Child in the manger.

An Advent wreath is another fantastic option. You can easily buy or make one.

That sounds so amazing. I will definately have to look at it being all the way in New Zealand it does make buying things difficult so we’ve had fun making the majority of things. Fortunately I found an awesome nativity scene and made an advent wreath( although we decided to use battery candles as it’s safer )
