My Dad sends a lot of forwards out to his friends’ email addresses and a lot of the time he includes my brother and me. Some are kinda funny but most of the time he sends raunchy, sexual jokes in poor taste. He’s not the most moral person, never has been and I find myself not having very much respect for him. He’s an alcoholic and he cheated on my mom and since they divorced he has had many girlfriends. He also gets angry easily and is very sensitive. How should I tell him that I don’t want him to send me those distasteful jokes anymore? They really irritate me and I would like to have more respect for him. 😦

You could create a filter that checks any e-mail from him to see if it has any words that you might find objectionable, and if so either diverts it into a holding folder or just deletes it. I say here that you can create this filter specifically to check e-mail from your father because it is possible you may get e-mail form other sources that use the same words in a non-objectionable context. (An example might be a mothers’ discussion group that uses anatomical terms to discuss childbirth or breastfeeding.) If this does not apply to you, you can just as easily set your filter to check all your e-mail.

If your Dad later asks you if you’ve seen his messages you can tell him truthfully that you’ve had such a bad spam problem (spam being unwanted e-mail, which this is) that you have found it necessary to filter your e-mail, and that if he wants a message to get through to you he will have to compose it such that the filters don’t dispose of it automatically. It is not necessary to tell him that he is the sole or primary source of the spam.

You could just return the favor and e-mail him Bible verses and inspirational stories.

You hit “REPLY” and type:

Please take me off your forwarding list for these type of jokes. They offend me personally and are leading me to lose respect for you as my father. Thank you.

Of course, if he continues, then you put into effect Timidity’s plan and start replying to every raunchy email with the appropriate Bible verse which teaches the virtue behind the offense. 🙂

Amen YinYang Mom!!! I think this is the best solution too.

HAHAHAHA :rotfl: 👍 That is a great idea.

We have a tendency to make things more complicated than they need to be.

Direct and to the point, with charity and kindness, seems to work well for me.

I agree with the Bible verse idea. Except that then you have to read the jokes he sends you and that means you have to put that junk in your mind.

I can mark email as spam and then all of the email from that address gets sent to my Bulk file. Which just gets emptied!

Warn him first, but if he’s sends you more I suggest you mark him as Spam. Tell him he can call or use snail mail when he hes something worth listening to.

My only hesitation on blocking him or sending all his stuff to bulk mail is that there might be some genuine emails in there or that the joke isn’t raunchy. He may very well continue to send clean jokes to her because he wants to make her smile during the day.

Your dad is your dad, I doubt he will change. What do you really want to do about this? You have received some good suggestions, but each one will have a different effect.

You mention that your dad angers easily. Is that something you want to provoke? There is no “right” answer to that, it is a personal choice you need to make.

If the most important thing to you is to let him know that these types of email jokes offend you, then be prepared for the fallout. Is it important to you if your dad cuts off contact with you because he is “offended” by your request?

Another option is to ignore those types of emails. Open them, see if they are raunchy, then just hit delete.

You know your dad better than any of us possibly could. And only you know what you want to do and what effect you are ready to deal with.

If it were me, I think I would just ignore the jokes. I would respond to “funny” jokes (and other non-offensive email) with a “thanks for that dad, I enjoyed it…you made me smile.” I would also send him any forwards that I enjoy (jokes, religious material, news etc).

I hope you come to the solution that is best for you and your dad. Good luck,

Malia

I usually write something quick like:

“Holy inappropriate Batman!”
or
“Thanks for the assult on my purity Dad, I’m sure you didn’t REALLY mean to send me that”.

report him as spam, take him off your list, tell him if he wants to communicate with you by email, phone, writing or in person he can do it within the bounds of common decency and courtesy or just forget about it.

I like LynnieLew’s suggestion. Keep it light but to the point. And following up with bible verse and inspirational message forwards would also be something I’d add.

Good luck. I’ll say a prayer for you and your dad (and your brother too, as his sensitivities are under attack as well).

Be honest and tell him that you love him and that a good relationship with him is extremely important to you but that you are offended by “dirty” jokes and to please not send them to you. Tell him you enjoy getting nice emails from him and to please continue keeping in touch via email, just no more raunchy jokes.
Be honest, yet respectful. He deserves honesty and respect and so do you. If he has a problem with this it is just too bad . HE will eventually get over it, and you can still set your email filters just in case he childishly decides not to comply.

Most definately! I like that one. Or you could also e-mail all the corny jokes from one of the threads on the forum. They could turn him off or knock some sense into his brain!
