Help. I have to admit that I am not coping with this one very well. I have a potentially stressful job, but I cope with that, and I seem to be pretty balanaced elsewhere, but this one issue is causing me great confusion and considerable heartache and dilemma.

My daughter is getting blessed in the mormon church. My wife and I are both mormons, but into our 5 year marriage, I have come to realize that mormonism is incorrect. I do not want my daughter (7 weeks old) to be bless by the mormon priesthood. They will “in the name of the holy melchisedek priesthood” give her a name (it’s okay mum and I choose the name), “by which she will be known on the membership records of the church”) and then by “inspiration” give her certain blessings. Generally this includes that she will marry in the mormon temple, perhaps go on a mormon mission, make the book of mormon her daily study, etc. All of these things are false !!

I do not want it to happen, but her mum (my wife) does. She is still true blue mormon. I have asked that it not be done - but lost the battle. I have spoken to my wife’s friend who will be blessing my daughter (in lieu of me - since I cannot because I no longer believe) and asked if he not include those specific mormon things in the blessing. He says he will do his best, but cannot guarantee it as the “spirit” may overcome him and force him to.

To add insult, the mormon bishop says that he or one of his counsellors must take part. I have asked for this not to happen if it is not in the written rules. My thoughts are that having one of them there (none of whom I respect spiritually as pastors). Still waiting on the reply on that one.

Now no-one has to beat me up on this one - I have done that, am doing that right now. I am fairly well sickened that I just do not seem to have the courage to stand up against this when it is so close to home. I know someone who has shown so much courage in their marriage to stand up against a mormon spouse and have their children’s names removed from the mormon membership list. I greatly admire this. But not I.

I even asked my wife if my daughter could be bless by a Catholic priest. No.

She is a great companion and wife, but my process of moving away from mormonism is causing great tension. I am convinced of Catholicism, but have not joined as yet, again through fear of the impact on my marriage. I was a mormon for over 20 years and a mormon bishop for 4. And now the child that we have been blessed with, I cannot even stand up and protect her at 7 weeks of age !! Some father !!

Can anyone give me any guidance ? Am I being too concerned ? Does it make any difference ? Should I not just build up the relationship with my daughter and teach her in such a way that she loves God and thinks. I am sorely convinced that anyone who thinks and turns their heart towards God, if they are honest, will not join mormonism. Is it best to keep my powder dry for that battle ?

God bless you my brothers and sisters for any counsel that you can give.

Hal.

I don’t know the official answer, but your family will be in our prayers. I am an adult in RCIA–brought up Lutheran.

I think your love and guidance as a father throughout her life will have a much larger impact on her faith than the ceremony itself.

That said, it sounds like you have a tough road ahead. I wish you the best and know God will be there for you (and your daughter) at all points along the way.

:hug1:

Prince Hal,

I don’t envy your position. I agree with MamaZona…what you teach your daughter later will have more of an impact of a ‘blessing’ at 7 weeks old.

My prayers are with you,

With any divine intervention, she will sleep through it.

Don’t count God out yet, Hal.
