Lol, what that guy said was great, all the hate filled comments were disgusting, but I’ve come to expect nothing less from the so called “tolerant” left. One guy was calling for the mass arrest of all the “religious right” and got 22 up-votes. Liberals and feminists are truly deranged.
Seriously? You actually think keeping young women at home and uneducated past high school until they can be passed off to a husband is a good idea?** Thankfully, the Church doesn’t hold those views.**

Yes – I thank God – the Church does not hold those views.

Well… I disagree with parts of it, and was even more irritated when a facebook friend jumped to the conclusion that it’s Church teaching.

1a) As others have pointed out, college degrees can be a lot of work. Especially if the man is also working in college for extra money. Did you know that it can take upwards of 7 hours to grade 25 people’s homework? And that’s only HALF of the total work that needed graded.

1b) Also, it really is a good idea to have a backup plan for earning money. My dad probably won’t lose his job, but if for some strange reason he does, my mom has a valid pharmacy license.
  1. Did they really pull the “near occasion of sin” card?! America is a near occasion of sin. And hopefully, she’s been raised well enough to avoid sex and stuff like that. Also, it’s no different for guys going off to college. So should we stay back too?
  2. I argue that a lot of parental skills are instinctual. For instance, earlier this summer I was at a family birthday party and we went for a boat ride on a private lake. One of my cousins who’s very young didn’t have a life jacket and was walking near the edge of the boat. So I thought to grab him. Did anyone teach me to do that? No. It’s just that I’ve grown up and can think to protect people besides myself. Also, I’ve never been formally taught any rules of thumb like what counts as a fever or what foods are dangerous to babies, but I’ve picked them up over time. (For context, I’m a guy)
  3. Ah, the first valid argument. But alas, it ends in a non-sequitor. The cost of college is more a reason to seriously consider if it’s right for anyone, male OR female.
  4. So now girls can’t even want to go to college? I’m sorry, but that really IS misogynistic.
  5. facepalm Finances are a valid reason to use NFP… Also, not every family plans on paying their kids through college. My family’s fairly well off, and even then, I’m only getting $30k/year
  6. No comment.
  7. Umm… The people I know going to seminaries are doing so in place of college.

I tried to keep an open mind regarding the original article (even after reading the title), but. . . . . wow. Just, wow.

Several wise points could be made when it comes to the topic of university, such as discouraging a daughter from pursuing degrees that will have little return value, or staying away from liberal/radically slanted universities, or to strongly consider whether or not she really *wants *a degree versus feeling that it’s just something she should do (in which case she certainly shouldn’t feel pressured to attend if her burning desire instead is to get married young and start a family right away).

To the above extent, reasons #4 and #5 had some merit. But overall, the article presented possible problems that could easily be prevented without resorting to keeping a daughter under her father’s roof until a suitor conveniently comes calling. Not to mention that all the problems he listed can easily apply to sons as well.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the whole article gave me the creepy feeling that it was more about sexual control than valid concern. Maybe I’m being too harsh on the author (some of the comments went overboard with the rudeness), but he could definitely have used a better approach when tackling each subject in way that wasn’t so. . . . . transparent.

She will attract the wrong types of men.
really does this article assume ALL college guys are lazy and will make bad husbands. There are plenty of good men trying to live virtuous lives in every college. Some more than others but the way this first reason is argued it makes it sound like all men are like this. If you are a good parent teach your daughter what to look for in a man and how to date someone. If you as a couple pray together are transparent with each other there is a much higher chance, if God calls the couple to marry, they will have a fruitful and happy marriage. If God doesn’t call them to marriage the transparency and prayer will help them realize this.
She will be in a near occasion of sin
This is a decent argument, but again if you rear your daughter well in Catholic morals hopefully when she goes off on her own she will be attracted to Men who are trying to live the virtues. I have no issue with having a young women trying to get a job or getting some finical grounding before going to college so that she is more mature and can handle the college environment better, but you can still live in college without falling into this environment or put in protections to help avoid sin.
She will not learn to be a wife and mother
and staying at home working would be better for this? First no where in Catholicism does it say that women are just for having children and holding down the fort at home. Sure being a stay at home mother is a very good thing to do and I have no issues against it, why is it a requirement to learn to be a wife and mother right out of high school. I know many of people who have gone to college meet a very good Catholic spouse and are now great Fathers and Mothers. My parents are an example. Plus the culture is changing and women have more of a finacial role in house holds then in the past. This is kinda of an absurd argument IMO.
The cost of a degree is becoming more difficult to recoup
yes but if you are wise with your finances you can repay it.
You don’t have to prove anything to the world.
so go to college to have a good life, why does not going to college have to be the solution to this problem?
It could be a near occasion of sin for the parents.
here is my advice in this situation if a family is struggling with financial situations don’t send to colleges that will run you up huge debt. It is called being financially responsible about college. If you can’t afford to a private college don’t send your kids there. Tell them that while I would love to help you send you to this college there is no way we can help you go here, either go to a college that you can afford, try and get a scholarship, or risk having lots of debt after you graduate college. If you as a parent know your financial situation and let your kids know how you can help in paying for college you can probably avoid being in debt in the future.
She will regret it
My mom doesn’t regret going to college why must she. The statement says she will my mom doesn’t
It could interfere with a religious vocation.
I’ve seen many vocations come out of college, if she is in the correct environment she can easily discern it.

Well said. The issues of ‘near occasion of sin’ and finance would apply to sons too.

A woman’s independence begins with her own money.

She who waits for her knight, cleans up after his horse.

I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.

This article is beyond ridiculous.
