Alright guys let me give you the story.

They are doing a 'bible club at my school, and I thought, since I have nothing better to do at lunch Id join it, for some interesting discussio and debate. A chance for me to share my faith. i was under the impression this would sorta be a 'Non-denominational" study ie. not soley expressing one P.O.V. I saw it was a Seventh Day Adventist, because it said " Brought to you by your friendly SDA Church.: I was alarmed. Anyway they also handed out a book called "Bible Answers. Of course it was just Seventh Day Adventist propaganda, the traditional charges- Pope=antichrist, sabbath change. And to make it even worse, it did not even mention these are SDA beliefs, it presents it as the only opinion.

Anyway, I knew I would not take part in a Bible study like this, so I am going to go in tomorrow and show my objections. I may make the offer to dsicuss things, and try and resolve( of course I know there cannot be a compromise.)

Anyway, there is one problem that somewhat froces my hand.

I have a friend, he was grown up going to church( he doesnt remember which- prot or Catholic.) He was baptized Catholic. And He said through me explaining my faith to him he has started to become interested in returning. However, he has been coming to this “Bible Club” and I know he is weak in his faith, and I don’t want them to somehow “brainwash”( for lack of a better term.) into one of them. He still wants to go to the club.(mainly because one of the guys he knows started it.) So I feel it would be best if I stayed and corrected problems in their theology.
Firstly, Guys sorry for the long read. 😛

But I need your help.
  1. Any advice you can give me would be great.
  2. I have the Catholic.com tracts, but if anyone could give me a few key passages that may help me defend my position.
  3. If you had any discussion with SDA, again any counsel would be great. ( I have dealt with them before, and held my own, but I feel these people are really prepared to convert people, and have their info ready to pounce on people not strong in their faith.)
  4. So Bible passages, ECF quotes about Catholic Doctinre etc.
  5. From the Bible I remember Christ saying something, and then he goes to list all 10 commandments except the one regarding the sabbath. ( Where is this located.)
And of course any general advice.

Thanks guys, and sorry for the long read. 😛

Remember that Bible is on your side it is a Catholic Book you just need to read everything in context and get some familiarity with it. Once you do that then it gets pretty easy to recognize parts of the Bible people use to attack the faith and how sometimes it is taken out of context or just mis-represented.

Often someone trying to prove faith alone will use something like Ephesians 2:8-9 (of course we need to not elevate on scripture above others and look at the Bible in context but here it is pretty easy to show how this can be mis-represented)
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Just make sure they read the next verse which better illustrates the Gospel message.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The point is everything should be read carefully in context and if you do get a little in over your head just stop the conversation. Say, you know you make a good point, write down the point and say you will look into it.

Here is a little key to help you remember to quickly find some passages of importance in the Bible which explain a lot, a lot of important passages have a similarity to help remember how to find them.
2:15 and 3:15 are important to help find verses,
Practice finding verses in the Bible and getting familiar with key verses used to defend the faith, here are some to get you started.

Like this…
one of the number one passages supporting the Church is one Timothy 3:15
“Church is Pillar and Bulwark of the Truth”
That is how I remember it.

Something to remember is 2 Timothy 3:15 is used to support the Protestant position by taking it out of context. If they throw this at you just read it in context to show they are talking about the old testament, “from childhood” the New Testament didn’t exist at that time.

Tradition
2 Thessalonians 2:15 "Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word of mouth, or our epistle.
1 Thessalonians 2:13(which is similar to 15) shows how they heard the Gospel first, before having it written down.

Purgatory
1 Corinthians 3:15

Faith Alone?
James about 2:14 to end

Seventh Day Adventists usually are pretty well versed in attacking the Church, so be very cautious and prayerfully represent the faith. You might just want to bring a notepad and keep notes to make sure you properly represent the faith. You can always say “I don’t know but I will find out and get back to you” then you are out of the corner and can come back with an answer.

Remember there is good answers for everything thrown at the Catholic Church so don’t make anything up or snowball anyone.

God Bless

  1. From the Bible I remember Christ saying something, and then he goes to list all 10 commandments except the one regarding the sabbath. ( Where is this located.)
This is just off the top of my head, but I think Matthew chapters 5, 6, 7 cover the Sermon on Mount, where Jesus tells the crowd that they must obey the ten commandments.

Thanks guys, a lot of handy information there.

It did help me when the matter came up.

I brought up my concerns, we discussed them with civility, and of course, while I held my own, I knew I would not change their mind, the more you show them logic, the deeprt they defend their own position. Anyway, while they recognized my concerns, they still said it is a seventh day adventist run program, and they still will b eusing that literature. I said that it would be better for both parties if I didn’t continue in this Bible Club of theirs.

My friends and I are looking into forming another Bible Club, or maybe a Catholic Club, where people interested can come.

Thanks
Andrew

It seems to me that a Catholic Club would be very helpful for you and other Catholic students (and interested others) on your campus. We see Bible Clubs proliferating, but when Catholics participate there is often the unwelcome proselityzing by non-Catholics who are ill-grounded in understanding Catholicism. A Catholic Club will help Catholic students grow in their faith and also help them learn how to answer the criticisms of your non-Catholic peers.

hello AK29…I’ve spent a lot of time discussing issues with SDA’s…with regard to their belief that “the Seventh Day” - the Sabbath - is still binding upon Christians and that “Saturday” is “the true Sabbath” I would point out the following:
For the sake of argument, let’ allow that the Jews in Israel have faithfully observed “every seventh day” since the time of Exodus, such that, when sundown Friday evening occurs in Israel the “true” seventh day begins.
Depending on where the date line is established, “Sundown Friday evening in Israel” can either be “sunrise Friday morning in North America” (if the seventh day occurs first in Israel) or “sunrise Saturday morning in North America” (if the seventh day occurs first in North America).
Assuming that Israel observes the “true” seventh day - how does mankind on the opposite side of the earth know whether their observance of the seventh day follows or precedes that of Israel?
see: A History of the International Date Line
at phys.uu.nl/~vgent/idl/idl.htm

This usually gets them quieted down for nowhere in Scripture does God reveal “the date line” and so, if christian Sabbath Keepers “in the west” want to make sure they’re observing the “true Sabbath” they have best moved to Israel.
