Hello all!

Over the past few months I’ve had an increasing interest in icons. I’ve read up on them, such as what their place in the Church is, etc.

I’ve felt led to start writing them. This weekend I did. I’m nowhere near finished, but for my first one I wanted to do St. John the Forerunner. It hasn’t been as hard as I thought it would be, but still has required much patience and prayer, too.

Anyways, I just wanted to see what you all thought about it, and what I could do to improve in the future. I’m extremely new at this still, but it has been a joy nonetheless.

Not to discourage you, but I think that there are specific rules about fasting that go into writing an icon. Also I think that it would be profitable to learn from an expert or read a book on it, because there are probably niceties, which aren’t obvious to the “untrained” eye.

Each ikonographer has certain steps that he/she uses when preparing himself/herself for painting an ikon. Fasting may be one of those steps, it may not depending what their spiritual father has advised.

There are certain “rules” that followed concerning what certain ikons contain and what colors are used.

Yes, it is advisable to seek out a teacher whose knowledgeable about ikons and ikon painting, it is also very prudent to study the various styles and techniques as well…

hope this helps…

Thanks to all who have replied!

I did in fact fast yesterday as I was preparing the board. However, I did not fast today because I thought there was to be no fasting on the Lord’s Day. Is an exception to the rule when one is writing an icon?

I have read a few books and read articles online as well. One of them being A Brush with God.

Don’t worry, I can accept constructive criticism. Clearly this isn’t my area of expertise, seeing as how I’ve never written an icon before.

DO keep up your efforts!

I struggle to draw a basic geometric shape, be it a circle, a square or heck… even a straight line!

Anyone with such talent to work with applying it in such a fashion is certainly to be commended.

My only advice would be to seek out different iconographers for further instruction - there is always so much to learn!
