I’m pretty sure this will get moved to another place, since I am not sure if this should be even put here. Mods, please move my thread somewhere else if it doesn’t belong here. Thanks.
My best friend called me last night. We had been out of touch for a long time until we went out for coffee 2 wks ago. Since then, we call each other here and there. I didn’t like being around her so much because she used to make me feel guilty that I didn’t want to go dancing and drinking almost every day (we used to go dancing Fridays and Saturdays before I met my husband). She has been with several men, so I really don’t like her life style.
Well, things are different now. She met a Mexican guy who is Catholic and she thinks this guy is “the one”. She says that ever since she met him, she wants to stay away from the promiscuous life she led. She said that ever since she met him (well, even beofre she met him she had voiced this) she wants to learn about the Catholic Church. She asked me last yr if I could take a Catholic bible study class with her but we never got around to doing it.
Last night she told me there are just a few things she disagrees with the CC and that if it weren’t for those things, she’d be Catholic. Those things were: 1) the Catholic Bible contains more books than the Protestant Bibles (BTW she’s a non-denom Christian); and 2) she feels no need to confess to a priest since she confesses directly to God.
I explained why we have more books and then told her that to her 2nd question she could find an answer even in her bible. I told her that Jesus commanded the disciples to confess others. She didn’t know that was in the bible, so she went to get hers and read it herself. I told her that when you confess to a priest, you are confessing to Jesus himself and that if she ever had the priviledge of doing that, she’d take so much weight off her shoulders she’d love confessing to a priest.
I’m so happy she wants to be a better person now. She used to be even more religious than me. She has taken many bible study classes and she was always pushing me to get back into my faith. Now she joined a “New Life” church but is very interested in the CC. I mentioned RCIA to her and told her I’d go the 2 yrs w/her and she said yes and was very excited.
What example can I set for her so she doesn’t get discouraged? I’m prety excited to actually have a potential Catholic friend. I don’t really have Catholic friends (except for here on CAF). My Hispanic friends are lapsed Catholics, so I’m very excited.
Do you think that because of the guy she’s going out with is a good reason to look into the CC? She told me half of her family on both sides of her parents are Catholic but she was raised Protestant…
What should I do with her in the mean time from now until the next RCIA begins?
