I have a friend who left the Church last semester. She is a wonderful person and very sincere, but she is very inclined to react to her emotion and does not possess strong logic–which are the two biggest reasons that she is no longer Catholic. The Church has always made it clear that if a person rejects the Church with full knowledge and consent, he puts his soul in danger: “They cannot be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or remain in it” (cf. LG 14). I don’t know how full her knowledge was, but I am certainly afraid for her soul. Obviously I can’t judge whether or not she will be damned, but I fear the worst and will be having conversations with her very soon.
Unfortunately, when I first heard that she had left, I leaned too far in the direction of making it clear that I didn’t hate her or judge her. She certainly knows that I believe the Catholic Church is the One True Church of Christ, but in my conveying to her that I do think that Protestants are also Christian, I think I may have gone too far and given the impression that I don’t think it’s really a big deal that she’s not Catholic. I really want to remedy that, which is a big reason why I’m going to strike up conversations with her soon.
I just wanted to ask everyone to please pray for me, that God will use me to enlighten her and bring her back, and that He will be able to fix the mistakes that I’ve made–innocently and knowingly–in not being a strong witness for the Faith. I need the grace to deal with this sensitively without compromising the truth, and to make it clear to her how urgent it is that she returns without scaring her off or seriously offending her. Please pray for her as well. She also has a close friend whom I know (and may decide to talk to as well), who left the Church last year. He got married in an Episcopalian Church this spring. Please pray for his return as well.
I just can’t help thanking God that I’m Catholic! It saddens me to see what my friends have lost.
