Is that true? every time I ever bring up a bible quote he always says that the bible is metaphorical and I don’t quite believe him. I’m asking you guys because I know a lot of you are quite intelligent with these type of questions.

Does he think that there is no truth in metaphors?

the bible does have many metaphors but it would be impossible for the entire book to be metaphorical. some of it is historical, some deals with laws, part is poetry, some is prophetic…

perhaps your friend means that he doesn’t believe in the literal truth of events like the creation story in genesis. if so, then he is in good company. christians go back and forth as to whether the creation story is metaphorical or not. that doesn’t make it untrue though.

No I actually think he believes in creationism its more for the quotes where god demands things of people that he twists everything. For example I brought up the sabbath day thing and he said how “No on knows when the 7th day is for god” and a lot of things that REALLY sounded like a bunch of B.S.

It goes as easy as this:

Parts which are meant to be metaphorical are metaphorical, parts which are not meant to be metaphorical are not metaphorical.

What does your friend base him claim upon?

There are people who believe Jesus came from an alien space ship. What matters is not claims one has but the evidence on which he bases those claims upon.

hm, any thoughts,Shadow Fire? 🙂

He doesn’t base his claim on anything he just says it.

Omg a space Jesus would be so sweet. May the moon be with you amen.

So who believes Jesus comes from space?

There are those kind of nutsos… weird as it seems  I even heard of one with a PhD 😃

Does your friend think that meticulous archeological details in the Bible are also metaphorical? Does he think Jesus is metaphorical?

I’m not too sure. I think he believes in Jesus. Its basically ANYTHING that may limit him (demands from god) he will say are metaphorical. I don’t really have anything against people who don’t limit themselves to the bible and gods demands. Its just it really annoys me how he says hes such a devout christian but RIGHT when anything may limit him he says its metaphorical or bends the words around in the most absurd ways.

It is obviously very important to your friend that he be able to excuse his favorite sins by twisting the scriptures. We all have favorite sins. Some have the gumption to own up to them and repent. Others prefer to silence that little accusing voice by denying the sources that might call their behavior or non-behavior into question. Yes, I have a Ph.D. but I am not that dumb. Besides it is in Science and not Moral Theology or such like.

Ya, its kind of annoying though. I suppose I just don’t really think hes much of a Christian when he twists everything just so he can fit into the mainstream and say hes Christian. Not saying I’m a christian or anything, but I was.

Hm, if he’s really a Chrsitan ask him this one: why is he a Christian if Christ didn’t rise from the dead? If he didn’t rise then all his being a Christian is in vain:

1 Cor 15,17 says:
if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.

So if the ressurection is not metaphorical, then the greatest miracle in the Bible is not metaphorical. Cannot God then perform miracles also on a smaller scale?

I wonder what your friend would have to say… hm 🙂

Shadow fire, if you don’t mind the question…

mm… why did you stop being a Christian? Just curious, really:) I’m really interested what people have to say. Also I was once doubting quite a lot

Hmmm, smart thinking. I’ll ask him that when I see him in looks at clock minute I have until class ends (I’ve been coding .exe files thats why I’ve been having short replies that have been taking a while.)
