Accidently spilled on her when she went to get Communion. The question is… how should she wash her shirt? Like normal (washing machine)? Hand wash and drip dry? Or don’t wash it at all?

FYI: Its her favorite shirt now. 👍

Two key things. Use lots of pure water to get the shirt soaked. If there is lots of water, then the species is diluted enough, so Jesus is no longer present. Then put the water on the ground, like in a garden, not down a regular sewer or drain. In other words, don’t do this proceedure in a sink and then let the water flow out.

Then you can launder the shirt.

Wouldn’t it be easiest just to rinse out the clothing with water outside? Of course, it should be done reverently, not with a hose or something.

Hmm, it would be better if one of the deacons around here answered this question than me. The procedure I know is for if the spill just happened. However, I can imagine reasons that the procedure hypothetically could be different if a long time has past and the spill is dry. For safety’s sake I would advise you follow the exact procedure given, unless you can get an authoritative answer otherwise. The procedure is not burdensome.

In some circumstances there might be danger in your method perhaps of Jesus himself falling to the ground. Dilution first avoids that if Jesus is still present in the spill.

I’m no expert on what to do in this situation. I was just thinking that if you poured the water onto the shirt outside then the water would go directly onto the ground. However, I forgot of the need to dilute first to assure that the Real Presense is gone. So what do you think would be best? Soak the shirt in water until the species is diluted (making sure to soak it in some container so that the water may be spilled outside) then spill the water outside?

Yes. And I’d empty the container somewhere that is off to the side outside, like by a bush or plant onto the dirt. Certainly not on a sidewalk or anywhere that would run off to the sewers.
