I would like to begin a family Rosary. Husband is non-Catholic, but not opposed to attending Mass and praying together. Oldest child is 3. He asked me the other night, if I wanted us to pray together, why does it have to be the Rosary?

I explained how you are to meditate during the Hail Mary’s, and it’s not just repeating prayers just for the heck of it.

What can I tell him about why we should pray the Rosary together?

well, it doesn’t have to be… if you offer him the lead, he may surprise you… or he may pull out his rosary and say lets go… either way the family is praying together, and isn’t that the goal… 👍

I agree. Heck, if he’s willing to pray together you have won the battle! Start with something he is comfortable with and then maybe you can introduce the Rosary at a later time. Or, maybe you can let him lead the prayer time in exchange for one evening with the Rosary!

start with Dad reading the bible aloud every night, a great habit in any case, with short evening prayer following (expression of contrition for sins and failings of the day and Our Father). If you can get him to start with Luke’s gospel, there you are, that is praying the rosary without the Hail Mary’s that give him such a problem. Then you can add a Hail Mary and Glory Be to the other prayers, and I bet within a few months you will be praying at least one decade of the rosary.

JUST GETTING HIM TO PRAY WITH YOU is a win - win situation. The Rosary will come later. (voice of expierence)
