Hey guys, I’ve have a jw friend and I know he’s wrong about this but I would like to show him that in John 1:1
the greek word was not an “a” but rather a “was” for “was GOD” not “was a GOD”. Can you help me with this I don’t know What the greek word was. God Bless!
 
Well, this will depend on the exact translation of the bible you have. Go to 1John 5. It comes up in verses 7 and 8. Some translation has it as "there are three who testify, the Father, the Son and the Spirit, AND THESE THREE ARE ONE. Not all translations use those exact words. So make sure you use one that says it plainly. Or, better yet, get your friends bible translation and see how it has these verses written.

This shows that Christ is God, and not just a god. And also check Isaiah 9:5. “For unto us a child is born…” Again, be careful of the translation. Later in that verse, it should say Mighty God. Mine uses the term God-hero. However it says it, it shows, again, that Christ is God.

There is an article in the verse before the word for God that specifies “the” God.

en arch hn o logoV,** kai o logoV hn proV ton qeon**, kai qeoV hn o logoV.

The middle part of this verse is the relevant part.

kai(and) o logoV(word, nominative, sing.) hn(to be) proV(with) ton(accusative, sing., M) qeon(God, accusative, sing.)
ton is the word that is important. It refers to **qeon. **It could be translated, “the God”. It can’t be translated “a God” because this article is in the sentence. **ton **means “the”.

This is from my limited knowledge of Greek. I am currently taking Greek so I have learned all about the article.
 
I have a very good friend who is a JW. Frankly, it’s not going to matter what you tell your friend, their bible will say differently. Their bible is one of the worst translations made. We used to get into these same kinds of discussions, with her out to convert me and I out to convert here…definitely not a smart approach.

If your friend would be willing to look at a copy of your bible, or find an earlier bible online, one that was translated before the New World Translation, you can show your friend how all these bibles agree on the wording, except for theirs.

Lots of luck…and pray pray pray before having a conversation. They are trained not to listen to what anyone else has to say.
 
Steven Ray has an excellent book called “Saint John’s Gospel” that can be purchased at Ignatius Press. On page 41 he does a Greek Word Study on this.

He says partially, “…These words testisfy to the divine nature of the Word. In Greek (kai theos en ho logos), no article is used before the word “God”. John elimiates the article in order to prevent identification of the Word with Father, to whom the title “ho theos” (the God) properly belongs…”

Steven Ray’s book is a wealth of knowledge he has compiled for us. It is well worth to have in your apologetics library. I hope this helps you.
