So, my mom says she doesn’t believe in religion persay. She believes in God, (and Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I think) but she says all religion is flawed and that no one really knows which one is right, and that as long as she believes (in the way she does) then God will be perfectly fine with it. Um…any thoughts?

Hi, Rose!

I once was schooled by a lady who stated that no one knows the truth about religion because there’s no proof anywhere… she ignorantly or purposefully rejects nearly 2000 years of Church history.

Your mom may enjoy the hollowood spirituality: ‘just believe.’

Wrongly or rightly she has the right to believe so.

Yet, she cannot claim that she gets that from God or from Scriptures:
16:18 So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.’ (St. John)
5:21 Give way to one another in obedience to Christ. 5:22 Wives should regard their husbands as they regard the Lord, 5:23 since as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife; 5:24 and as the Church submits to Christ, so should wives to their husbands, in everything. 5:25 Husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her 5:26 to make her holy. He made her clean by washing her in water with a form of words, 5:27 so that when he took her to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless. (Ephesians)
12:27 Now you together are Christ’s body; but each of you is a different part of it. 12:28 In the Church, God has given the first place to apostles, the second to prophets, the third to teachers; after them, miracles, and after them the gift of healing; helpers, good leaders, those with many languages. 12:29 Are all of them apostles, or all of them prophets, or all of them teachers? Do they all have the gift of miracles, 12:30 or all have the gift of healing? Do all speak strange languages, and all interpret them? (1 Corinthians)
Can anyone please God by going against His Salvific Plan?

Maran atha!

In the end Rose, you are only responsible for one person’s salvation. Yours. I’m sure you love your mother, but if it is her choice to believe in Jesus (as you think) and then ignore or deny what Jesus said and taught, well, she will have to answer for that. My suggestion is not to beat yourself up about it. It is a tired and worn out cliche, but 'you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink." Pray for your mom, and then leave it all in God’s hands.

I once heard a wonderful (and true) statement. It went, “we say to God, ‘thy will be done.’ At our end, God will say to us, 'thy will be done.”

One last thought. “all religion is flawed.” And she is not??

AmericanRose, your Mom is so blessed that she has your prayers.
She is undoubtedly sincere, and God who sees the good intentions of our hearts, knows her heart.
It’s hard to wait, to be patient when we so deeply yearn for our dear ones to share in the Sacraments.
You may find it reassuring go to Mass on behalf of your Mom as well as yourself, in the sense that you are asking God to bless and grace your Mom through your own participation and prayer
