Figure I’d post here because my question is related to Leviticus. I already posted in the Scrupulosity page. Anyways after 5 months of looking, I finally found a job at Burger King. I was really happy about it, too. However, my scruples attacked me this morning. Most of the food is non kosher according to Leviticus. A lot of Christians say we are not under the Law any more, but a lot say we are! Even Jesus said “If you really do love Me, you will obey My commandments.” If I quit, I won’t have any money and my dad will be really mad at me… Please help!

Umm… are you saying that you keep kosher, yourself?

In any case, it’s not necessary. All foods were declared clean (for Gentiles, at least): see Mark 7:18-23 and Acts 10:10-16. Of course, that only covers animals, not methods, right? Well, see the Scriptural account of the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15 – Gentile Christians aren’t held to the Mosaic law: “It is the decision of the holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities, namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right.” (Acts 15:28-29).

A lot of Christians say we are not under the Law any more, but a lot say we are!

‘Christians’ may say all sorts of funny things; but Catholic Christians will tell you that you’re not bound by the Mosaic Law!

So, relax… and have a Whopper!

If you believe that the Church was established by Christ to guide His people, then you already have your answer.

The CHURCH says what God says, and the Church says you can work and eat at Burger King.

Read Acts of the Apostles - we no longer have to be kosher.

Be thankful that you have found a job! Unemployment leads to idle minds and that is the devils worklshop. Obey the 10 commandments and pray to the Father in Jesus’ name.

FYI even young practicing Jews work at Burger King - does not mean you have to eat there if you choose not to for whatever reason.

I think your judgment is being clouded by fear due to your scrupulosity.

Don’t worry - the fact is that for 2,000 years the Catholic Church has taught that God instituted the Mosaic Law to temporarily serve a purpose for the Israelites prior to Christ and that that time has passed and that God no longer commands the ceremonial and dietary precepts of the Mosaic Law, so there is absolutely no need to concern yourself with following the dietary laws or wondering if God thinks differently.

I like that quote, but everyone says the animals are symbolic for Gentiles. And when I read about when Jesus says nothing outside the body can defile it, but what comes from within, people say it is when the disciples were not washing their hands before eating. Now I’m afraid that I have to go back and read over the laws, like not wearing wool and linen, and I was going to shave but I didn’t today because I don’t want to violate any more laws. Sins are violations are against the Law. I’m being serious, I’m very nervous about this… I don’t want to be lukewarm…

But even Jesus said He didn’t come to abolish the law but to fulfill it…

I have been praying for a job, and I think this may be an answered prayer. When they called me to set up an interview I started to thank God. But now I don’t know…

The Church teaches you what God wants. He gave authority to the Church in matters of faith and morals so all Church teachings are 100% supported by God.
You are only subject to the moral laws (i.e. the 10 Commandments) from the OT. You are not subject to dietary or ritual laws.

The scriptural evidence which have been provided here for the Church’s teaching is important - but, for you personally, it is more important that you recognize and trust what the Church teaches. Since you are scrupulous, trying to figure this thing out by interpreting the scripture passages by themselves is a dangerous move - Scripture is hard enough to interpret without scrupulosity. With scrupulosity, your judgment will only be further clouded by fear and anxiety. Take it from someone else who also has suffered from scrupulosity.

The Church teaches and has taught since the time of the Apostles that the time of the Mosaic Law is over. There is no need to concern yourself over it in anyway. Thank God for your new job, and do your best to stop worrying about it - someday you will look back on it and see clearly that were being scrupulous.

We are not under kosher law/dietary requirements.
