I have tried a new approach to those well meaning people who come to my door trying to evangelize me. I tell that they know their arguments and that I know my arguments so it is futile for us to convince each other of our errors. Instead, I lead the conversation around to all the things that we can agree on. It has been interesting watching those who have had the Catholic Church all wrong come to recognize that most of their own beliefs came from the Catholic Church in the first place.

I tell all of them how much I love Jesus.
I agree with all them that Mary is Jesus’ mother and that she must have loved Him dearly and that He must have loved her dearly.
I agree with them that the Bible is the Word of God.
And so on.

This list varies from Baptist, to Mormon to Saturday Adventists.

When they begin criticizing the Church I simply refuse go there, I just start talking about something that I know that they can agree with and if appropriate I will let them know that the Catholic Church taught that first.

You would be surprised how this conversation throws them completely off track.
