So DH and I got to talking about how screwed up our parents are (normally he isn’t very forthcoming, so I was all ears when he started talking). Back around Easter, DH’s parents driving home from a family get-together had an accident - FIL hit a deer in his wife’s suburban. I believe their insurance wanted to total the vehicle, but FIL got the money and had the car fixed. DH and his brothers were hoping for their mom that she would get into a new car. She is 5’, 400+# and has a hard time getting in and out of this beast of a vehicle. Not to mention it is a gas-guzzler that she drives 20+ min every day round trip to town for work.

So that’s strike one. DH went trick-or-treating w/ our oldest by himself this weekend (I had a sick baby at home), so I missed the latest episode. I guess his dad went to an auction this weekend and bought himself a new John Deer tractor. He didn’t say how much it was, he only mentioned that the cheepest one there was $60k, so we all figure he dropped $70-$80k on his new toy. They have lived in their delapidated home for 6+ yrs and in all that time, the toilet in their main bath has been broken and he has never fixed it. So when it was MIL’s turn to host Christmas last year, we were all embarrassed for her b/c everyone was forced to use FIL’s ‘mud-room’ bathroom which is basically a closet, when they have a perfectly beautiful, much larger bathroom, except for a non-working toilet.

Around our parts, $70k will buy you a fairly nice home. We all wish FIL would trash their dump of a place and build his wife a new place that’s small enough where she would be more able to keep up on the cleaning - they really don’t need all that space. My poor MIL. DH’s dad has very plainly told all of us together about his grandiose investments to provide for us and our children, but no provisions for his wife whom he will likely outlive. Poor woman, it just seems unfair that she has to continue to work just for the ins. while he retires @ 55 to do what he wants and blows all sorts of money on himself and doesn’t take care of her.

It seems a lot of times that men and women trade off as their families grow up and leave the nest. Mom spends the early years at home raising her children while dad works, then later dad retires, but mom goes to work for the health ins. Except in MIL’s case, she was never afforded the luxury of staying at home w/ her children. Poor woman.

Has your MIL ever voiced a concern about the desire to lose weight?..At 400 lbs, she is morbidly obese and will have so many health problems:(…Insurance would probably pay for a gastric lap band b/c of her health risks.

How bout the kids all chip in for her next birthday/christmas/flag day or something and rent a plumber and get her toilet fixed?

Well, MIL has 3 sisters who live w/in 20-30 minutes and some years ago they would go to weight watchers together, but she just got away from it. She is the type that she would NEVER consider surgical intervention, even if her dr told her do or die. It makes DH sad that she won’t take care of herself, it saddens him to think that she may not be around to watch our children grow up.

I have mentioned to DH on several occasions about all of us chipping in to have the plumbing worked on, but he says that it’s actually a matter of replacing the entire septic tank. Really, we are in no place to help out financially and it isn’t a matter of money anyway, it’s just that the home is of little importance to FIL. Truly, if he can plop down that much cash on a tractor, money is not the issue. That being said, we all chipped in last year to buy the folks a new t.v. just so they wouldn’t be embarrassed when they had all that company at Christmas!

I think it is going to take the 3 boys confronting their father together to tell him that he needs to take care of their mom - I believe they have done this on one other occasion to get her a stove. FIL was just going to use the junker left-behinds from the previous owner of their home on the one hand while at the same time turning around and paying cash to get himself a brand new truck. It is only a matter of time before the boys band together on their mother’s behalf.

So maybe that’s what we should be praying for!
