How does this compare the the Missal. Is it a good supplement to have.

I have both the missal and My Prayerbook, Happiness through Kindness. I like the Missal better. The prayerbook has a section of thoughts or meditations for various things (the secret of happiness is to live one day at a time, for instance). Those are OK, but I personally wouldn’t miss them if they weren’t there.

There are MORE prayers of a given subject in the prayerbook. For instance, if you want a prayer for benediction, there will more in the prayerbook compared to the missal. The prayerbook does have the ordinary of the Mass, along with private prayers that can be said during the mass.

However, I think the missal is easier to use. I think the prayerbook has a few too many choices for some of the prayers. I find myself getting lost in the prayerbook (I don’t have enough bookmarks, I guess) and unable to find what I’m looking for. The Missal has a better theology of the Mass and is a good book to learn about the faith. The missal also has nice artwork, and a slick section in the back describing all the symbolism in the artwork.

I got the prayerbook on ebay for $10 or so, and that’s a fair price. But if you can score a New Roman Missal, that’s what I’d suggest.

I have Fr Lasances’ My Prayer Book. As Ben said, it is no substitute for the missal. It’s an excellent prayer book. Many devotions and meditations, etc. It was published in 1908, and is a great prayer book for the traditionalist. It has been reprinted, and as ben says, can be found on ebay. I bought an original one on ebay for 13.00, and it’s nice to have the original, but because of the age, it is fragile. I’d suggest the reprint if one is going to use it daily.

I also own With God by Fr Lasance. As far as I know, they are not being reprinted, so you will have to find an original. They were piblished in 1911. It’s pretty much a deluxe edition of My Prayer Book, and includes the Ordinary of the Mass in english/latin. It is over 900 pages vs about 650 in My Prayer Book. Expect to pay over 100.00 for one in excellent condition. Mine belonged to my grandmother, and she obviously used it daily. It’s falling apart 😦

Does it include prayers like the St Michael prayer, Rosary, Stations, Novenas, Litanies, Prayers to Saints, Angels, etc.

It contains all of those things, in addition to a Little Office of prayers to your Guardian Angel, a list of prayers and Acts for mass and visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and a set of prayers to say each day of the week for the holy souls in Purgatory (frankly, it’s a little weak on the rosary, you can find any number of good pamphets on the rosary on the internet that you can print out and stick inside the book).

Actually, my opinion of it has warmed considerably since my earlier post. Due to it’s smaller size than the Missal, I’ve been keeping it in the glovebox of my car and whenever I go to Eucharistic Adoration I usually take it along.

I just got a copy of My Prayer Book by Fr Lasance (hardcover) today from FSSP publications and really like it. I noticed that it didn’t include the images from the original edition. But everything else reprinted seemed to be the same I wonder why?.

Does the Fr. Lasance prayerbook have prayers in Latin too? I’m guessing it does, but I just want to make sure. Currently, I use either my Angelus Missal, little TAN Books prayerbook (no Latin though) or my Raccolta. The former two are good but they don’t have what I would call a large number of prayers, and the latter is almost too big and complex to really use on a daily basis. I’m looking for kind of a medium-sized prayerbook, that’s well organized and user friendly, and has prayers in both Latin and English. Right now I’m eyeing Blessed Be God:

or Christian Warfare:

So which one do ya’ll think will be best for what I described above?

😉 I have my mother’s original copy of the book, and yes it does have the latin for various litanies, etc.
Will have to look through it again.

Going by the description on the Angelus site, I’d say My Prayer Book and Blessed Be God are close to the same. The description of Blessed Be God didn’t mention Latin though.

My Prayer Book does have Latin/English for many of the prayers, but not all of them. For example, the Seven Penitential Psalms have the Latin/English format, but the Litanies do not.

My Prayer Book (original, not the reprint) measures about 5 1/2 " by 4 ", and the print is small.
