I never read my school’s newspaper because I generally feel its not worth it, but today someone happened to hand it to me and said I should read it. I’m working on my midterms right now, but I did take a second to look at it, and there is a big article about how the wellness center is offering birth control and birth control counseling. They say they also offer the morning after pill for $35 and insist it is not an abortive agent. I didn’t think a ‘Catholic’ college could be doing this. Is there anything that can be done? It just seems so wrong.

Wow… where do you go to college?

I’d personally sit down with some administrative folks and ask your questions directly… or with the college priests (since you mentioned it’s a “Catholic” college)…

Although… sometimes the healthcare centers aren’t run directly by the school (funded by an independent health insurance company)… and they may be forced by the health insurance to provide those options legally.

Yeah, I’d bring it up with an administrator… and see if they can ask for bids on different health insurance providers (that would be compliant with the teachings of the church) to work at the healthcare center…

How sad. 😦

If it is a Catholic school, contact the bishop.

On a side note, there is this pernicious error touted by some Catholics that the Church teaching on contraception is based on arbortifacient effects (in effect saying: as long as it is not abortifacient, you can use artificial birth control). It is not.

Even better. 👍

Since you are in the archdiocese of Chicago (as I am), I’d definitely contact someone with authority in the diocese. Cardinal George is so strong and doesn’t water down the Church. It is ridiculous that not only are they offering something that the Catholic Church forbids, but that they are falsifying information about this as well as if to excuse it! 😦 Unfortunately, so many Catholic colleges don’t have the vow to hold true to the teachings of the Magesterium, and if yours doesn’t then I don’t know how much you’ll be able to do. I hope you are able to do something, if not be able to assist in getting rid of the birth control for good, at least to warn those around you :). Pray! I will be praying for you and this situation :).

That’s good to hear. And that being the case, I would certainly let him know what is going on.

I wish there was something that could be done about Catholic colleges and universities going against Catholic morals. You’d think the bishop of the diocese could do something about it but I heard they are relatively powerless when it comes to the schools.
