My husband and I are going to keep our niece for a while, while my sister gets some counseling and tries to work through everything. I just wanted to ask for your prayers for her and my husband and myself. Shes hurting really bad over this guy, so she just asked for some time to herself and a break. please send some prayers our way.

You got 'em…and you are a wonderful sister, a wonderful aunt and that little girl is blessed to have you and your husband in her life.

From one Auntie to another - you GO girl…

Just a suggestion, along with my prayers…discuss openly with your sister before you accept your niece in your care…how long this arrangement will be? What role she will have in your niece’s life? What financial arrangements will be made as well as health insurance etc…It is my observation, that you need to do the health care thing in writing, as well as some formal notification to the niece’s school if she is school age. Even though you ultimately are taking on the responsibility temporarily, your sisters must also know that she is still the child’s mother. Constantly, pray and involve your niece in prayer for her mother as well.

This weekend my 6 y/o grand daughter will be coming to live with me. I know exactly what you are going through. It is a huge decision, but the bottom line for me was Chloe’ and what she needs. I have no regrets whatsoever.

Excellent advice! I took a teenager into my house and her father refused to sign gaurdianship over to me so I could enroll her in my companies health insurance because he was afraid to lose welfare benefits for her. Needless to say, she needed to see a doctor and we had to inform him that he was responsible for making the appointment and also for paying for it. Turned out to be a disaster because he showed up at the dr’s office and threatened my ex and grabbed his daughter and was yelling like a maniac. The dr’s office called the police and she was removed from my home because her dad was an unfit parent…great logic there huh? Anyway, she ended up in the hospital, where they would not release her to her mom or her dad since they were both unfit, and they told her to call me and see if she could live with me since I was the only one that cared enough to attend their orientation program. State was not happy but the young lady was. I ended up having to go to court to get temporary custody of her. Illinois doesn’t like it when you aren’t a foster parent in their state and you get a foster kid by court order. In my defense, I was a licensed foster parent in another state at the time but we had just moved to Illinois. I went through the paperwork to become a foster parent in this state but I kicked the social worker out of my house as she was rude and I felt it was a matter of self respect.

Thank you all for your prayers and encouragement. My beautiful neice is 19 months old. I didn’t think about getting her insurance card so thanks for reminding me of that. we have set no time limit on this. I will keep her as long as she needs me too. there are no financial arrangements, she needs to spend money on therapy right now and getting herself together and taking care of herself. If we need anything my parents will help. so far so good, last night was nice. we gave her a bath and read a bed time story and had dinner at the table all together and she helped put the dishes (tupperware ones) away out of the dishwasher and then went to bed without complaint. then she woke up at 6 am. we are not morning people, that is going to be the hardest thing to adjust too. on top of that dumb things, like how am i going to carry groceries up to the second floor apartment with the baby? is ok to sit her in her playpen while I bring groceries in? and how to find, intimate time with my husband since we have a one bedroom apartment and leave the crib in there with us…silly questions huh?!

TarAshley,

Your neice is very very fortunate to have you. I will pray for your family. God Bless.
