I have long debated with myself about actually writing this post.

I have decided to post this with the hope that I can give glory to God, and defend the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church that I have come to love.

Comments about my testimony, or critiques of my reasons for converting to Catholicism are more than welcome. But I certainly won’t be distraught if this thread is deleted or moved.

My journey to Catholicism begins at my birth. My mother was a nominal Catholic, but I was baptized as an infant. I have come to believe that at that moment, solely by the Grace of God, I was born again, washed of my original sin, and made a son of God.

I grew up with a small concept of God and Christ, but I never felt a strong desire to have a relationship with God. Yet all of that changed at the age of about eight. My grandmother began taking me to Sunday School at a local Southern Baptist Church. To this day I am not sure why, but I began to absord Biblical knowledge like a sponge. In less than a year I had learned the major tenets of Christianity and had unconciously memorized many Bible stories. At the age of nine I was re-baptized as a Baptist after saying a prayer with my pastor. I still remember those days after that moment. I was a Christian on fire for Christ. I voraciously read the Bible and learned as much about Evangelical theology as I could. Soon I had aquired a huge amount of Bible knowledge, and I spent virtually every morning at my Middle School telling others about Christ.

At the age of twelve however I began to wrestle with the Baptist doctrine of “Once Saved Always Saved”. I believed this, but I constantly worried about whether I was “saved”. It tortured me until I said another prayer with my family, making a commitment to Christ. I didn’t stop having doubts about my salvation, but I began to intensify my evangelism. I organized a Bible study at my school and every morning our group would read the Bible and I would preach a sermon on the passage. I preached every day trying to witness and spread the “gospel”, which was based on Evangelical soteriology.
Soon I was ridiculed and given the malicious nickname of “the preacher”. I still pressed on, preaching and studying the Scriptures.

As I entered High School many things changed. First and foremost, I met
“friends” who were involved with sin and sure enough I followed suit. I never gave up on my Christian faith, but I was still felled by doubts about the “assurance of my salvation.” One day, I came across a book called: “99 reasons to become or remain Catholic.” This book challenged my understanding of the Bible, showing by the very Bible itself, the insufficiency of Evangelicalism. What shocked me most was the fact that it was written by a former Presbyterian minister. I still remember walking out of the school weeping and overcome with fear after learning that the Bible does teach that one can lose his/her salvation thru mortal sin. Adding to this was when a deacon of a local Catholic Church gave me a copy of “Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth”. I was fourteen then.

Soon however, I began to immerse myself with Evangelical authors and books. I hoped to combat this Papist “heresy” (God forgive me). I even began to debate with Catholics on Beliefnet.com, trying to show them the error of their ways. I thought the Evangelical arguments were Biblically sound and I couldn’t imagine a Catholic being able to actually refute them on a Biblical basis. Sure enough however I presented the arguments of CARM on a post trying to destroy the doctrine of Transubstantiation. Yet to my shock, a Catholic easily refuted my arguments, not with Papist inventions as I had supposed, but with one simple tool: the Bible.

Confused and beaten, I feld back to CARM and other anti-Catholic websites. For the time being, I still felt secure in the arms of Evangelicalism. I soon began to debate with Jehovah’s Witnesses. I tried to show that the Trinity was Biblical, but to add historical weight to my arguments I turned to the Church Fathers. I was fascinated by the beliefs of the Early Christians, until I realized something dreadful. When I saw a Catholic apologetic website (turned out to be catholic.com) use the Church Fathers to defend Catholicism, I was shocked. I soon realized that every doctrine of Romanism that I had worked so hard to combat was believed by the Early Christians.
Coupled with Biblical evidence, I captitulated. With time and study I was soon convinced the Catholic Church was the TRUE Church. To my great joy, I will be recieved into the Church fully on April 7, 2007.

There is one thing that I question: Where was God in all this? I feel as though I came on this conclusion on my own, by research and Bible Study. I want to know where God fits into the picture of my conversion. I know it sounds crazy, but during my journey to my realization of the truth of Catholicism, I never felt that God was directing me. Where was He?

In any case, that is my testimony. There are many more details I’m sure, but these were the basic ones.

I hope that this brings glory to God and his Church.

For in the end I am nothing.

Amen.

That’s one of the (many) neat things about God. He uses the everyday mundane things in this world to further His Glory. But behind it all, you know he’s there.

I think if God were to take a more direct and public intervention in our faith journeys, we would run the risk of believing only because we have seen. As Jesus told Thomas, “blessed are those who haven’t seen and yet believe” (Paraphrasing).

Good luck on the rest of your journey, and thanks for telling us your story!!!

He was, even though you did not perceive His hand in this. The Holy Spirit led you to do all that studying, and He gave you the wisdom to understand what you were learning. :blessyou: That was a wonderful testimony. Welcome home.

What a wonderful testimony. Yes, He’s been besides you all this time and prepared you. I wish I could spend more time reading Bible when I was your age. 😉

Congratulations and God bless!

He was always with you:

Footprints in the sand
*One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only.

This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord,

“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”

The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you.”*

Peace and God Bless

Hi, Antonius
Sounds a little familiar !

Matt. 16: 17 Jesus replied, ’ Simon son of Judah you are a blessed man ! Because no human agency revealed this to you but my Father in heaven !

God bless !

I agree with the statements made by others here, but I wanted to add:

It brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye every time someone comes home. I am glad you are here.

God’s grace made your grandmother take you to church. Had she not, you might have been a nominal Catholic, agnostic or atheist.
God gave you the grace of faith without which you would never have become an Evangelical Christian.
Without God’s grace, you wouldn’t have sought to evangelise that JW, and might not have come across the Church Fathers.
God gave you the grace of humility, without which you would have never questioned OSAS nor had the intellectual honesty to read the books you came across and research Catholicism and realise that it is His Church.

God was there all the way. Without accepting His grace, your heart wouldn’t have been opened to Catholicism. Without humility, you would never permit yourself to become converted. You would still be trying to refute Papist “heresies.”

By God’s grace, you have let Him lead you.

And now you are where you are by the grace of God. All honour and praise is due to Him.

God bless

Where was God? Let’s see:
My mother was a nominal Catholic, but I was baptized as an infant
There he is.
My grandmother began taking me to Sunday School at a local Southern Baptist Church.
A little more intervention…
To this day I am not sure why, but I began to absord Biblical knowledge like a sponge. In less than a year I had learned the major tenets of Christianity and had unconciously memorized many Bible stories.
by the grace of God.
I was a Christian on fire for Christ. I voraciously read the Bible and learned as much about Evangelical theology as I could.
God filled you with desire to know and love him.
I spent virtually every morning at my Middle School telling others about Christ.
Instructin the Ignorant is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, so there’s God.
At the age of twelve however I began to wrestle with the Baptist doctrine of “Once Saved Always Saved”. I believed this, but I constantly worried about whether I was “saved”.
God will lead you to truth, so He’s here again.
I organized a Bible study at my school and every morning our group would read the Bible and I would preach a sermon on the passage. I preached every day trying to witness and spread the “gospel”, which was based on Evangelical soteriology.
Searching for truth, trying to help others gain salvation; I’d say God was pushing here too.
Soon I was ridiculed and given the malicious nickname of “the preacher”. I still pressed on, preaching and studying the Scriptures.
We’re expected to be ridiculed even more than Jesus was - it’s a sign of His action in our lives.
As I entered High School many things changed. First and foremost, I met “friends” who were involved with sin and sure enough I followed suit. I never gave up on my Christian faith,
God gave you the faith and strength to do so.
One day, I came across a book called: “99 reasons to become or remain Catholic.”
Basically physical intervention by Him
Adding to this was when a deacon of a local Catholic Church gave me a copy of “Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth”. I was fourteen then.
and if the last wasn’t God’s direct hand in your life, this sure was.
I soon began to debate with Jehovah’s Witnesses.
You learn genuine Christianity REAL quick when debating a JW. I know from experience. This was a blessing straight from God.
to add historical weight to my arguments I turned to the Church Fathers. I was fascinated by the beliefs of the Early Christians,
God lead you to truth again.
I soon realized that every doctrine of Romanism that I had worked so hard to combat was believed by the Early Christians.
God again.
Coupled with Biblical evidence, I captitulated.
God given grace to accept the truth, and submit to His will.
With time and study I was soon convinced the Catholic Church was the TRUE Church. To my great joy, I will be recieved into the Church fully on April 7, 2007.
And those Sacraments are the biggest sign of God of all. I’ll be Confirmed and recieve first Eucharist the same day!

Amazing!
You did all that and you are only seventeen!

In heaven everyone is a Baptist:thumbsup:

Very well stated!

I am exceedingly grateful for your comments, all of you. You have shown me where God was when I couldn’t see Him, and how He acted when I couldn’t understand. Now that I look back on it, it astounds me that He worked all those miracles to draw me to Him.

If that is not love, then I don’t know what love is.

In any case, I will continue my walk with Christ. It has always been my desire to know and love Him, and now I realize that that desire was placed there by the Creator Himself.

I give Him my thanks and my praise.

Continue to pray for me my bretheren as I will y’all, I’m still young so I have my trials ahead of me. Yet thankfully, God will be there in all of them.

Amen.

Yesterday, while I was at work and reading your testimony, I was in tears with joy.

I just read your story and what an amazing journey you have had at such a young age! I’m glad it brought home to the Catholic Church. Have you ever read “Home Sweet Rome” by Scott & Kimberly Hahn?
I have no doubt that the Holy Spirit was your guide to the Church of Jesus Christ.
welcome home!
