Mysteries of the Rosary?

When praying the Rosary is it necessary to always read the biblical quotes that go along with a mystery. Could on just announce or think of the mysteries name. Example would be the ascension of Mary. I am talking about individual use.

Well, no, you don’t need to read the scripture. It’s helpful for many people to do so, but whatever rocks your boat

Small nitpicky point - we speak of Christ’s ASCENSION (since He raised Himself to heaven by His own power) but we speak of the ASSUMPTION of Our Lady, Elijah, Enoch etc (since they were assumed into heaven by God’s power).

Historically, probably the vast majority of people throughout the years have just announced the mysteries and then gone to the Our Father and Hail Marys.
Not saying scriptural Rosaries are not to be found in earlier times, but think of the billions of Rosaries that have been devoutly prayed by illiterate peasants, and by people who didn’t have special printed booklets available.

A priest once advised me to allow the Holy Spirit to guide me while praying the Rosary or any prayer, for that matter, rather than to be “locked down” by reflections, etc. in books. Although, many times, my mind is so distracted that I need the inspiration of the writings of the Saints to get my heart praying and turned to God.

My scriptural rosary booklet has an *Imprimatur *from 1961. I have read (somewhat loose) claims that this is a modern revival of a late medieval tradition, such as this website.
