how is a cahotlic to go about this?

generally the stories are ok but what about the fact that other “gods” are being portrayed?

i’m thinking of series like Thor or Percy Jackson.

or would be wrong for catholics to write their own stories using mythology?

thoughts?

It would not be wrong. Reading Homer’s Iliad is also not sinful. Portrayal of gods is not bad in itself. Remember that God is the Ground of All Existence, and is not a being among beings but Being Itself. All these Greek gods are just supermen, beings alongside other beings who cannot either account for the existence of the universe or for their own existence.

We’ve used a lot of mythology in the books we’ve written. It’s understood that Zeus, Thor, etc. did not exist and they are never presented as if they did. As someone who understands storytelling, I know that the human(s) the god interacts with are the people the audience reacts to. Sure, the god has powers and abilities but he’s presented as an alien/supernatural force who helps or hurts the humans he comes in contact with.

Thor was one of my favorite comics growing up. He and the other Asgardians looked human and had human traits, along with their powers. That’s why we can enjoy such stories. Or, what if you had the power of Thor? How would you use it? Would you fight evil and defend the innocent and your home? Noble characters are always appealing because they model good behavior.

I think it would be fine for a Catholic to write such stories.

Peace,
Ed

I used to work with this guy back in the mid 90s who truly held belief in those types of ‘gods’ LOL Im not kidding, he was about 45, a supervisor at the time, We learned of this when myself and the stores manager were discussing religion, my boss was a Pentecostal, when he (mark, the superv), brought up the fact he believed in the ancient Greek gods, we did not believe him at first, but he was telling the truth…I didnt know some people still believed in that kind of thing, but I guess I was wrong!! He actually got upset that we thought he was joking, apparently he held this belief pretty tight…but to each their own I guess…(shrugs?)

I heard a call-in to (I believe) Catholic Answers many moons ago who believed in the god Jupiter and gave the apologist proof why Jupiter was more powerful than our God - I don’t remember the details but it had to do wish Jesus dieing on the cross.

Yeah, after I wrote my post on here, I looked around online about other people who truly still believe in the Greek gods, surprisingly, there are still quite a bit of people living today that do believe these gods exist! I guess this really did not surprise me as there are still ALOT of people that still believe the earth is flat…I am not lying about this, Google it yourself, there is actually organizations today that believe this!!!
