i was wrong on all three counts! Hate to think how the recent(ish) motion picture treated the whole thing.
Joni Mitchell and The Chieftains didnt improve the Laundries image.

Thanks for this. The movie was as you would imagine: the evil Church and the poor persecuted unwed mothers. What would the girls have done if there had been no laundry asylums? Been career prostitutes? It was shameful to be an unwed mother back then, but now it’s acceptable to be a “single mom.” Times were different. Children used to work in coal mines too. I’m surprised they weren’t complaining they didn’t get a good dental plan.

Gotta love a religion that is complicit in enslaving the most vulnerable members of society. Knowing how cunty most nuns are it doesnt surprise me that they ran abusive slave houses. Probably relished in it.
