NAB or Douay Rheims?

For Advent I am following the daily devotion offered by “The Word Among Us” magazine. Each morning I read both the NAB (in the magazine and missal) and the RSV-CE. The difference is marked. (just vs. righteousfor instance, the Psalm differences are really profound but the missal Psalms are the Grail version as Vatican will not accept NAB revised Psalms for Mass).

I think if you want the best sense of what’s being said the RSV is better. The D=R=C, which I have and read, is so antiquated linguistically that it is tough to understand in some instances. The words don’t mean the same any more. I would take the NAB over the D-R=C for the modern man.
 
As a lector, I have to be familiar with the NAB. But I love the D-R! And the New American Standard Bible. It’s pretty.
 
I prefer both the DR Challoner and RSV 2nd CE over the NAB.
 
I use the RSV2CE but would love to get a DR with the Haydock commentary at some point. There is a website that has the Haydock commentary superimposed with multiple Bible translations. Someone needs to print an entire RSV2CE version and give it to me as a Christmas present… 😃

Douay-Rheims Challoner most definitely. I own an NAB, and the versions are just too different. The meaning is lost in the NAB. Mine says “Greetings, favored one!”, instead of “Hail, full of grace!”. The NAB is good for explaining what “hail” is supposed to imply, but it takes away the argument for the Hail Mary, because Protestants say “See? It’s not in the Bible!”. I avoid modern translations as best as possible. The Douay-Rheims may be harder to understand, but for the linguistic fanatics such as myself it’s unmatched in terms of its rich language and close translations. It is one of the most accurate Bibles on earth, but of course it cannot ever be as accurate as an actual Greek text.
 
The biggest problem with the NAB or more particularly, the NABRE, is not the translation as much as the commentary. So if you are after the same translation you will hear at Mass, just get a NABRE, leave the study notes alone, and use this: haydock1859.tripod.com/id330.html and you will be good to go.

What is yur opinion of the Confraternity-Douay (old testament) Revised Challoner-Rheims by the CCD ( new testament) bible
Which is called the new Catholic edition of the Holy bible. printed1957?
 
Either one is good enough to safely use, but I prefer the Douay Rheims all the way!

I’ve never heard of it before. The one I’m hopefully getting for Christmas is the one being sold by Saint Benedict’s Press in a soft black leather-bound cover. I hope it uses Anglo-Saxon, because I’ll be bitterly disappointed if it doesn’t. 😃

Sounds like the same exterior. This one doesn’t use Anglo Saxon but my mother’s family bible uses the Anglo saxon.
My bible was published by the Catholic book publishing company in New York.

That Bible is the Challoner/Douay Old Testament with the Confraternity New Testament. A very good Bible! 🙂
